This experssion originated in America, during the early 20th century.
Cassell's Dictionary of Slang only mentions "originally US, 20th
century"; Chapman?s Dictionary of American Slang is a bit more
revealing:
"[...] by 1940s Go away and do something characteristically stupid;
=?get lost,? ?go fly a kite?: ?He asked for another contribution and I
told him to go piss up a rope.?"
(SOURCE: Answer by Ken Greenwald, "piss up a rope", Wordwizard,
December 21, 2002 <http://www.wordwizard.com/clubhouse/founddiscuss.asp?Num=3740>).
As for the usage in other English-speaking cultures (outside the US),
it should be noted, that all of the books listed in Amazon.com with
this term seem to be American or to quote Americans.
No -- I don't know everything, but I do know that because of the fact that I have logged in less time on Authentic Forum doesn't make me a second class human being -- I'm not all into the "hide behind the monitor" mentality -- I don't chase people around in real life whispering snide comments out of the blue at them like some deranged 8th grader.
Respect goes both ways and I'm not here to stand in line awaiting verbal abuse. I'll gladly treat people well and explain myself when asked -- but I'm not sitting back with a big "NOOB" sticker attached to my forehead which apparently means to some people here: treat like shit.
That's BS -- your forum owner had to make a friggin post to address it. Maybe you should get a clue and start to behave like adults -- welcome people a little bit more openly.
I am trying to be diplomatic here, but is something or has something gone on that I don't know about? I just don't understand the negativity coming from you, April. You are so defensive and you obviously haven't been around long enough to appreciate Shelley's bluntness. And you haven't been around long enough for us to appreciate yours. Can you not understand this? You have to chill, and fast or you will not find yourself happy here.
I just drank half of my Heineken Light just catching up on this thread.
All I have to contribute is... my fiance cannot tie his own tie either. Makes me want to scream. But if that's all I have to complain about then I'm good. By the way, he's 7 years older than me. I totally agree with Liz- a lot of men take longer to mature. I was happier when I dated guys older than I.
This thread is pathetic the way the OP has been disrespected with all the threadcrapping. Its not my section and i'm not going to lock it but i am seriously saddened and disgusted by the rudeness and bickering. GO BUY SOME DAMN JEANS PEOPLE!!
Honest to FUCKING GOD, I don't think I can be anymore pissed than I am right now.....
Not only has the OP been grotesquely direspected, but the same goes for members, MODS, and anyone who took the time to read and attempted to post a relevant and thoughtful response.
All the regulars-What do we do with trolls? We CANT forget....ignore them and they'll go away.
April-Check your pms.......
