MEASURING JEANS AND DETERMINING WHAT SIZE TO PURCHASE
This guide will show you how to correctly measure jeans to ensure fit when buying and less hassle when you're selling. Not everybody measures their jeans the same way...but this is the proper way to measure and the usual way most reputable, authentic sellers will measure their jeans on ebay.
Measuring Waist:
To measure waist, lay the jeans flat with the front facing up. To ensure the proper measurement, hold the jeans from each side at the top of the waist and pull to get the slack out. Notice that the jeans will have a natural dip in the front. LEAVE THIS DIP THERE! When you pull from each side, this dip will go to it’s natural position. Then lay the jeans flat. DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE DIP. You can make another light tug to each side while the jeans are lying flat to remove any slack, but DO NOT PULL WHILE MEASURING. Pulling while measuring will give you inflated measurements. Take the actual measurement and double it.
The Jeans below measure 17 x 2 = 34”
Inseam Measurement:
To take the inseam measurement, lay the jeans out with both legs in a straight line, as if they are doing a split. Alight one end of the ruler with the edge of the cuff and the read the measurement as the edge of the seam. Note: Use the leg on the side where the crotch seam is folded. Once the slack is removed and the seam is straight, let go of the jeans. Do not pull on the leg while taking the measurement. Read the actual measurement at the edge of the crotch seam.
Notice that the leg is nice and straight but is not being pulled while the measurement is taken:
Notice here that the inseam measurement reads 32-1/8”. Some sellers round up or down to the nearest ½”. I like to give the actual measurement.
Front & Rear Rise:
Because even men’s jeans now have a high degree of variance in the front and rear rise of the jeans, it is important to know how to measure the rise.
Front Rise:
To measure front rise, lay the jeans flat with the front facing up. Grab the front waistband and pull up until the crotch seam and leg seam intersection is revealed. Make sure the jeans are lying flat, and as with all measurement, do not pull on the jeans while taking the measurement. Measure from the fold of the leg seam where it overlaps the crotch seam. Take the actual measurement at the top edge of the waistband as shown.
Your ruler should be even with the edge of the fold in the leg seam as shown below:
Notice the Front rise of these jeans measure 12-1/8” in the photo below:
Rear Rise:
To measure the rear rise, lay the jeans down on a flat surface with the front facing down. Grab the top of the rear waistband with one hand and reach underneath just above the crotch/leg seam intersection. Pull the waistband up while pulling the crotch area down until the crotch/leg seam intersection is revealed. You will not be able to get the entire rear of the jeans to lay flat at this point, but that is not necessary. What is important is that the entire rear seam be straight and lying flat as shown. Physically butt the ruler against the fold of the leg seam where it intersects the crotch seam and read the measurement at the top edge of the waistband. Do not pull on the jeans while taking this, or any other measurement.
The rear rise of these jeans measure 16-1/2”.
Leg opening:
The leg opening is measured inside to inside at the leg opening as shown:
I measure the very edge of the > made by the opening. Be sure the cuff is lying flat, but not being pulled while taking the measurement. This leg opening is 8-5/8”.
I advertised the following pair of jeans as 32 x 28 and the customer returned them saying the actual measurements where 34” x 29”. He had to do a lot of pulling to get to 34 in the waist and 29 in the inseam!
If you are a buyer considering a purchasing a pair of jeans from sellers that measure jeans as outlined above, I suggest you measure your favorite jeans just as described above. Remember, do not ignore the rise if you expect the jeans you purchase to fit anything like your favorite jeans. NEVER SIMPLY GO BY THE TAG SIZE OF YOUR FAVORITE JEANS TO DETERMINE YOUR JEAN SIZE! AND NEVER USE YOUR WAIST MEASUREMENT AS INSTRUCTED BY ALL THOSE YOUTBE VIDEOS ON “HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WAIST”.
NO MATTER HOW A SELLER MEASURES THEIR JEANS, THE BUYER SHOULD MEASURE HIS OR HER BEST FITTING JEANS THE SAME WAY TO DETERMINE PROPER FIT!
Some buyers may want hip and thigh measurements. I only include waist, inseam, front rise, rear rise, and leg opening. For information taking hip and thigh measurements, see other posts.
