What is your favorite massage modality?

Not the kind with the happy endings or beginnings! I know your first thoughts and where you are going but I am way ahead of you. You know who you are........

I am talking about legitimate massage therapy modalities. I have recently gone back to school while the economy sucks to get a massage therapy degree because I want to try something different for a while. The money is not great, but is about $50-$75 per hour in my area keeping in mind that full time for a massage therapist is about 4 to 6 massages a day.

I have tried different modalities but seem to favor Lomi Lomi or Shiatsu when I get a massage. Swedish and deep tissue are ok for me but thats what most people like because thats all they’ve had. I have thought about specializing in a few areas such as pregnancy massage (special table with hole for the stomach/breasts and not touching the ankles in any way) but would like to get input on what a variety of people like. Any suggestions would be great especially from those who have had something other than Swedish. Thanks!

ART - active release techniques
if you want to work with a rehabilitative focus...

- not aromatherapy
- swedish doesn't do it for me
- hot stone is nice
- deep tissue is getting there....
- the thai yoga massage where you are doing something between partner stretching and yoga poses is surprisingly good

i need to find out what lomi lomi is...

if you like working with animals, there's a market for equine and canine massages (I think especially for palliative care).

I prefer deep tissue b/c that's what meets my needs. In fact, I'm getting a 1.5 hr. one this morning.

I also like Thai Yoga but I've only had that done in Thailand, for hours. Absolutely great.

I like Lomi Lomi too for relaxation.

Not a fan of swedish, hot stone or shiatsu.

When I was pregnant, I used to get pre-natal massages regularly.

I've never had a massage in my life

A lot of people I know like the hot stone massage.

^ Neither have I. I hate being touched and even more so by someone I don't know.

^^I used to be the same way, unitl I got my first massage. There are so many misconceptions about it but its true that some people don't like to be touched at all. I don't even really think about it as a person touching me now.

I had a lot of shoulder and back problems that are just about gone now from getting regular massage. This is something that doctors, injections, chiropractors and physical therapists couldn't fix

Yeah, I have been thinking about it recently after having periods of intense back pain. If it gets bad enough one day, I might bite the bullet and do it.

Once you do it the first time, if you get someone that knows what their doing, it won't be like biting a bullet.

I'm the same whereas my mum and sisters could be massaged for hours I have been invited to spas so many times for treatments but I couldn't imagine anything worse!

Deep tissue is good for me, I'm not a fan of Swedish. I had a pregnancy massage (which was the same as a Swedish, just on that pillow) and didn't enjoy it. I've had one massage on water cushions where they press on you and you press on the pillow but it didn't really do much. I haven't heard anything good about hot stone massages from friends but I've never tried it.

The only massages I've ever done are the ones already put in the recliner/chair...

I just feel weird that someone's getting all handsy on me without getting a meal or a gift first, I'm an old fashioned guy...

^ Seriously. I can't even stand sitting next to people on the Metro and always stand unless there is a single seat. I don't even sit that close to people I am fucking.

The type of massage I am talking about has nothing to do with sex in any way, shape or form. There are really a lot of misconceptions about it, but thats just the way it is.

It sure beats taking pills or being in pain all the time. My life has completely changed because of it.

I think hot stone is the trendy thing at the moment. It feels good but I wouldn't want to pay for it. I would rather spend my money and get a deeper massage.

I would be using a special table for pregnancy massage with cut outs. Pillows just don'e sound very comfortable.

What is ART?

Yeah, totally Nicole, you are right, massage is amazing for the body and generally has nothing to do with sex (other than those that are going for the happy ending shit... put I mean, c'mon, just go to a prossie and get the full meal deal!). I give massages all the time, I just hate receiving them. Just me being stupid with personal space issues. Why TF am I talking about this???

My chiropractor does it. He has treated the Canadian artistic gymnastics team and NHL hockey players, if that makes him a more credible source.
I think it's basically works by stripping away scar tissue.

One to many glasses of wine again

Like I said, I don't even think about it being a person touching me. Its more like an experience I guess. It gets the blood flowing and gets rid of the toxins. It works wonders for depression and self esteem issues.

I'm telling you man you should try it if you have a bad back. A lot of places in Canada require massage therapists to have two to three years of education (or 2000 hours) to get a license. Thats a bit much if you ask me but you should really know what your doing after that many hours. After that long in school doing physical work every day the last thing a massage therapist will want to do is choke someone's chicken for a few bucks. School costs too much for that.

Here in North Carolina school is about 1 1/2 years with 500 hours. Its not fucking cheap either.

On another note, I had my first hairy back guy the other day...........................

I haven't gotten that far yet so I know nothing about it. I will be doing therapeutic massage in a few months so I guess that is where we learn that if at all. It may be a specialty that you learn somewhere else. Right now I am just doing Swedish, sports and chair massage.

I honestly hate getting massages. My massage therapist at my spa forces me to do deep tissues. (He swears I need it) I really hate it and dread every moment of it. He hurts IMO.

Get someone else. Thats one thing I don't like about some massage therapists. That whole "take it like a man thing". It doesn't have to hurt to help you.

Do you at least feel better after? Do you have any less pain?

Yeah I feel better after but I hate taking time out of my day for it. I'd prefer something relaxing where I can fall asleep but noooooo cant do that.

If he doesn't do what you want him to do then find someone else. He is supposed to listen to you and give you what YOU want. Seriously, if he is one of those guys that likes to force things on people he needs to be fired becaues he is probably doing it to clients as well. Thats a quick way to lose business. If you don't like it and you get if for free can you imagine what the people paying for it feel like?
