locked/unlocked (cell phone)

If you cancel your contract on a phone it is still locked in w/ the service provider, correct? ...until you go to the mall or wherever and unlock it for, say, about 20 bucks?

i dunno how it is with other service providers, but with T-mobile you can just call in and request the unlock code (for free) after 3 months of owning the phone... i did that with all the phones under our family plan.

GSM phones = one which take a SIM card can be unlocked and used on any GSM network in the world.

CDMA phones = Sprint/Verizon phones serve no purpose to be unlocked.

T-Mobile - Cingular usually give you the code 3-6 mos after. Just tell them you are going out of town. I got my code from Ebay for $11-12 bux. Nokia codes are easy to find and cheap as well whereas unlocking an iphone would be much costlier.
