Canada Customs Tax - HELP

Revolve sent me an item declared accurately at $70 USD. For whatever reason, without opening the package Canada customs decided to value the item at $951 CDN for their tax calculation. So the tax came to $120 CDN.

I haven't yet accepted the parcel. I know I can either do two things:

1) Pay the $120 and try to get my money back from Canada customs. But how difficult is this to do? Canadian government agencies aren't known for their customer service.

2) Refuse the shipment and the item would go back to Revolve. Perhaps they may be willing to resend it and eat another shipping charge?

Merry Christmas, Canada Customs. I hope you all get food poisoning.

I would go in there with a receipt from Revolve showing them how much the item cost.

The thing is that the post office and Canada customs are separate agencies. The post office has no communication with Canada customs, and just serves as the deliverer and collects whatever money may be owing to the government.

they did the same thing to me recently ... I just paid for it and figured it wasn't worth the hassle to get the $80 back... the mail man did give me a form with the # to call to dispute it though (sorry I have no idea what I did with it)... I would call the post office.

this is the # she gave me 1-800-461-9999 (she wasn't sure if it would be different for different areas)
but she said that you need the CU # off the package to call in. She said that if you go into the sub post office that's holding the package, you can ask them to see it and the CU # as well as the phone # you need will be on the customs bill right on it.
hope that helps a bit... she had no idea how long the process would take or anything more than that...

Thanks so much!

I will get the CU# from the post office, and give that number a call after Christmas. The post office did already let me have a look at the parcel, so I don't think it will be a problem to do so again.

It's a pretty straightforward process. You fill in a B2G form to get your money back...a copy of it should be found on the back of the customs declaration card (E14) that is on your parcel.

Here's a link to the form if you want to have a look at what's involved:

They did that to me once. The probably valued the item at canadian retail price (we all know how ridiculous that is ). I paid the fee than filled out the form. I sent proof showing how much I paid for the item (paypal receipt and sales thread since it was an AF mall purchase). It took a while for me to get the money back though. Over a month.

That can't be it because it's a pair of jeans. The actual retail, which they would never find because it's an obscure brand, is $200 US...but the sale price was $70, which was what Revolve indicated on the parcel.

I think it was just negligence, and they taxed it as $700 US instead of $70 US.

Do not forget about the food that Canadian Customs stole from you and probably ate.

Happened to me before too. I'd fax/send them an invoice from Revolve and maybe the CC invoice too to show them how much you paid. As Geebs said they will refund but it can take a long time.

I sent a CBSA refund request in May, called to check the status a month later, forgot about it, received a cheque I think in September. I don't know why I thought I waited five months, but I just checked my records it was actually about three months wait.

That sucks. It's a ridiculous error.

Someone at Canada Customs obviously had a little too much holiday cheer. I guess they saw two zeros instead of one. How else do you read $700 from $70!?

I guess I was lucky that I got my refund as quickly as I did. Then again, this was 2 years ago.

I'm in the same dilemma as you.

Canada Post just rang my doorbell & wanted $127 in duty & taxes. The items were marked at $375 Cdn. but I checked my record, it should cheapie Ts and shirts bought from Revolve at $78USD, WTF??? Sent it back to the post office to figure should I take the package or resend it back to Revolve.

This is annoying. These people get paid big bucks to F___ up, too much egg nog this time of the year???? Hhmmmm.....time to rip us off big time to fill their coffer.....

That happened to me before b/c a seller put the retail value of the item that I won (as opposed to how much I paid). I won the item for $19USD and the f*cker put $250. I had to pay $25~ to get the package and then sent in the form to Customs for reimbursement - I got every single penny back. It took less than a month for me to get my money back.

I guess I've been pretty lucky then! The last few packages I got from Revolve didn't incur in any custom charges, and they were all over $100CAD.
