Rock band or Guitar hero?

I'm about to break down and get one or the other...
I play on a PS3 console.
I'm not really up to date on the versions, but I'll probably get the "latest" with the wireless guitars etc.

I've been browsing the songs etc that you can buy online, and reading a couple of reviews - basically the main gist is that rock band is alot easier to play, whilst guitar hero is a little more sophisticated - the studio feature seriously intimidated me!

Went thru the track lists and figured I would be better acquainted with the rb songs vs the gh songs.

Anyone who owns both games who can comment on which one they enjoyed more? No fail mode is a huge bonus! I am a casual gamer who doesn't really have the time to unlock songs.. are there cheat/no fail modes for both?

TIA

I own rock band, but I've played guitar hero, and while both are a lot of fun, I like rock band a lot more (I played them both before I decided which one to buy). I play video games pretty casually too, and I thought rock band was just more fun. Also, if you get a group of people together, you can have up to 4 people play rb cooperatively, vs. 2 people playing competitively in gh. Also, I really like playing the drums . My friends like to sing, but I think I'd scare people if I tried .

You can't play with more than 2 people for GH?
I thought they had a drum set for GH too??

I saw a video of someone doing the drums on expert mode for NIN's perfect drug and my jaw dropped. I think that's pretty much what brought on this whole craze to get a set!

I'm a fan of Rock Band, but I think it's because I suck at the guitar and bass parts so I can play drums or sing in Rock Band. If I was any good at guitar/bass I'd probably love Guitar Hero.

Hmm... I have a wii, so I guess the versions are different... Looks like the new guitar hero (the one that shelley recommended ) is gonna have drums too... I would just go by what songs you like better then- It looks like the drums on the new guitar hero have cymbals though, which is cool... My rock band drums don't have that!

I'm a bit of a Rock Band junkie, mainly guitar and the occasional vocal disaster, but I've played Guitar Hero from time to time too. I prefer Rock Band (I), mainly because it just has the best playlist in my opinion (Rock Band II isn't so great, but still better than World Tour for my musical tastes).

(Are you thinking of Rock Band I or II, by the way? The sequel was out for the Xbox in September, and I think it's out for the PS3 now too. Speaking of which, the folks behind Rock Band made the first two Guitar Hero too, but Guitar Hero III and World Tour are from a different company. Confusing, I know!)

Rock Band has more songs and more extra downloadable content if you are interested in those, and the songs themselves feel truer to the actual guitar charts in Rock Band too. Being familiar with the songs will probably not help you that much, though, but it's great fun playing (or trying to!) an old favorite (Freebird!)

Guitar Hero does have a wider hit window than Rock Band so you don't need to be so accurate, so you might find that one a bit easier (the difference isn't huge, though, but noticeable if you play both). Other than that I think both games are about the same, difficulty-wise, and neither is really more sophisticate than the other (they're both nowhere near the technicalities of playing actual guitar). I can't recall if they both have a no-fail mode, though, as I've never had to use that!

I'm not sure if that's was much help to you, but I don't think there's that much of a difference between the two series, so I'd probably go with the one featuring your favorite notes. You can even use some of the instruments made for one game for the other (not all, though, if memory serves), so you might want to watch out for that too!

i like rock band a lot better. but people are right, guitar hero is more sophisticated and a lot harder on guitar and bass. i like rockband because i like the songs better, and there are a lot more downloadable songs. but i guess it all depends on your taste. go to best buy where you can test both out and see which one you prefer. i think more girls prefer rockband and guys prefer guiar hero.
btw, someone in my communications class this past semester gave a persuasive speech on how rockband was better than guitar hero. it offered many valid points, but i don't really remember them :/

We have rock band. Once you buy II, you can rent I and save all those songs as well. Now we have a lot to play.

I have both, and they both are pretty fun. If you are going to have more people play the game with you then rock band would be better, if you ONLY want to play the guitar and have two people play then guitar hero would be better. You can sing play the drums, guitar and I beleive even hook another guitar up to rockband leaving you with two guitars, one drum, and a singer. I kinda stopped playing both because they get boring, and new games are pretty expensive.

Guitar Hero World Tour FTW! imo, the guitar is more sophisticated on GHTW because the addition of the touch pad (so you don't have to strum if you don't want to, just tap-also you can slide on it) and the ergonomics on the buttons are way better than Rock Band's guitar (which has buttons that are indented, instead of raised like on a GH guitar for a better feel/hand position). With the release of the World Tour aka GH4, you have the drum sets which is superior to the Rock Band's due to the addition of symbols. The mic is pretty much the same on both. After all that, it all comes down to set list, which is pretty much to each his/her own. I'll take GH-WT over Rock Band anyday.

I'll buy Rock band 2 or GH world tour/III whatever is the latest for those versions so that I can get the latest guitar kit/drums etc... then end up importing/ buying tracks I like online from previous releases These games all have downwards compatibility anyway right? e.g. if I end up buying GH 3 I can still get GH 2 and 1.

The "sophisticated" comment referred to the studio feature in GH 3 I think... Apparently you can create your own tracks etc. Naturally I don't expect GH to be anywhere near playing a guitar for real

So someone please fill me in again, I thought GH has its own version of drums etc?? Because if it's just pure guitar I'm probably going to end up with RB... I WANT A DRUM SET PA PA PA PUM!

I thought GH now has its own drum kit too, although it's supposedly less sturdy than the rb version.

I'd have to say the RB guitar looks cooler

OK, so here's another question...
if you buy either songs/ versions... can you import?
e.g. if you are using the rb kit can you play gh with it too? Because if you can then buying the game is not the problem... it's the hardware that is gonna sell me

I haven't played GH world tour yet but I would have to say I would go with Rock Band all the way and the 360 since Rock Band releases first with this console. I like the songs and graphics in RB in general and the downloads which keeps me hooked. This is just my opinion as I only own two games for the 360: Rock Band 1 and Rock Band 2

And if you are a Beatles Fan, that future game may launch first for the 360 as Harmonix, the game developer, may support 360 first similar to RB2. It may be only a few months but I can't wait to play some Beatles songs.

^ Fordie, my daughter was 10 and my son was 7 when they got guitar hero...my daughter picked it up straight away! She rocks and has beaten the first two games
My son did get a bit frustrated some times at first (he has no patience ) plus he likes racing and sports games more. But he has grown into it, they both love it
I am pretty sure you will be fine... they have easy mode to start off with.

^ ANYONE can play these games. I know a 6th grader who is on the expert level and does pretty well too. It takes some getting used to but once you get used to it you can progress really fast. It is so fun!

Yes, and that's even better with Rock Band... as someone mentioned earlier, you can import your Rock Band 1 songs into Rock Band 2 for a few bucks, so you should be able to just rent the game and get them that way For all the other games, you can't just import songs that way, though, so you'll need to keep the separate game around.

And yes, all the instruments should now be compatible between all games on the PS3 (there used to be some problem with Guitar Hero ones not working on Rock Band, but that's apparently been fixed). It's not quite the case on my 360, though... I have a slight preference for the Rock Band ones myself, but I'm not picky!

Oh, and the song creation feature in World Tour is nothing to write home about, if you ask me World Tour does have drums and so on now, and their guitar tracks are pretty much identical to Rock Band (except that they are less accurate sometimes if you ask my ears).

One of the best plastic guitar players on Youtube (Ben) was seven or eight when he's started... that didn't prevent him from doing perfect runs on the toughest songs in the game, though! Practice makes perfect, I guess, but stil... I'm jealous!

i have both.
GH is far superior compared to RB.
RB is fun, but it's a pain to set up imo.

I've got a preference to Rock Band. I don't know why, I kinda like the interface more, and I like the solo buttons on the guitar.

I really don't mind watching Heidi Klum advertise GH tho.
