New York budget: tax fucking everything!

New taxes:

*
An "iPod tax" that charges state and local sales tax for "digitally delivered entertainment services" - in other words, that new Beyonce song you download.
*
State sales tax at movie theaters, sporting events, taxis, buses, limousines and cable and satellite TV and radio.
*
Costlier driving with the repeal of the 8-cents-per-gallon sales tax cap on motor and diesel motor fuel, plus and increase in the auto rental tax.
*
Tuition increases at SUNY and CUNY, $620 and $600 a year respectively.
*
A 50 cent tax on cigars. The current tax is equal to 37% of the wholesale price, or 34 cents a cigar.
*
No more sales tax break on clothes and shoes worth $110 or less, except during two weeks a year.
*
Higher taxes on wine, beer and flavored malt beverages. He would also impose an 18% tax on non-nutritional drinks like soda.
*
The rich would pay more for luxury items through an additional 5% tax imposed on cars costing more than $60,000, aircraft costing more than $500,000, yachts costing at least $200,000 and jewelry and furs costing in excess of $20,000.
*
In addition, a host of a fees, including those related to motor vehicle licensing and registration, parks and auto insurance, would go up, as would various state-imposed fines.

Even with the cuts, the 2009-10 budget would increase a little more than 1%, the smallest hike since 1996-97.

Apparently the soda tax isn't on all sodas, diet sodas are excluded...
Quote:
Some notable revenue increases include: [B]A new, additional 18 percent sales tax on non-diet soft drinks to combat obesity and related diseases, with revenues directed to health care[/B

conforming the state sales tax to New York City’s practice of taxing personal services, such as barbering, massages, and hair salons, and credit rating services;

Lol Marka. I was thinking the same thing...

recent studies indicate that drinking diet soda can lead to our gaining weight. They can raise the A1C levels of those of us who have diabetes. And drinking them is also associated with a greater risk of heart disease.

Participants in an eight-year study at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, who drank several cans of diet soda every day were more likely to become overweight or obese than those who drank several regular sodas.
once again, say no to diet.

because of what? aspartame, splenda? It's not supported, or at least hadn't been last I studied sugar substitutes.

as stated, there are equally serious problems with drinking so much sugar.

oops sorry, that one's from healthcentral.com, but similar articles can be found on nytimes, cnn, etc.

just to clarify - there are many theories on why exactly having diet soda can actually lead to weight gain. (I'm not talking about having it once in a while, I'm talking about people who drink 2 cans every single day of the year (like my roommate )).
1. a lot of people who drink diet soda have the mentality that they're being somewhat health conscious by drinking diet soda. They feel less guilty about drinking diet and thus tends to "balance" it out by having other fattening food.. thinking that having a large order of fries is okay since you're getting less calorie consumption by drinking diet.

2. diet sodas have artificial sweeteners. artificial sweetners have been connected to a lot of things like changing your metabolism rate and brain chemistry, etc etc. there has been studies done with mice and human where both have gained more weight on diet soda than on regular.

there's a lot of interesting research done on this topic. it's controversial of course since the artificial sweetner industry is getting bigger and bigger and getting into more and more of our foods so this is not just necessarily connected to diet sodas alone but perhaps other "low-calorie" food that incorporate the use of splenda, etc.

the best thing is just - don't drink soda often. If you don't drink often, then just get a regular one. why load your body up with even more chemicals and artificial preservatives than necessary?

NY is out of control cost wise and always has been, lol.

I paid about $53 just in parking and tolls the other night to go see a show and the tree and then eat in the Bronx. Ridiculous.

soda gives you kidney stones...if i want to drink something fizzy ill usually go for seltzer or ginger ale

the taxes on clothing & shoes will just make people shop less, which is bad compared to the already tanking NY economy

I actually like obesity tax. Assuming soda is a proxy for public health care usage it makes sense. Closer to a usage based tax than the arbitrary abomination we call the current tax code.

Yeah but obesity is now being marketed with all the touchy feely sensitive issue now in America that you have to be politically correct about it. When in doubt, tax the smokers and make them smoke near the landfills and sewers.
Is Obese or Fat even an acceptable term anymore? I figured they came up with something like 'BMI challenged' or 'proclivity for overeating disorder' or some other sanitized pc term.

correlation does not equal causation.

i drink 2034902395023590235 cans of pop a day. are you seriously going to tell me that of the 8 cans of pop i drank yesterday (it's finals, fuck off), i'd be more apt to lose weight if I consumed the extra 880 calories?

(holy shit, 8 cans?!!) just because it says 0 or 5 calories doesn't mean it doesn't have other stuff in there that will mess with your metabolism av. and no one said drinking non-diet is going to make you LOSE weight, I WISH! drink coffee or tea instead.. that's what I'm doing. good luck on finals! I have one today too.. thus being up at 4 in the morning still
