How soon do you pay for the item?

I just can't getting this out of my mind tonight..So I have to ask somebody.

As the title said how soon people should pay for the item after you recieved the invoice.
I got the invoice this morning, and paid at night. The invoice was 16 hours old. I was at work all day, and couldn't pay it right away. (I tried to send the lady an email saying I will pay it as soon as I got home, but my boss came to my desk, and couldn't complete the email.)

Then I got home late at night, paid the item, then I opened my PM, got a mail from her, said the item was sold (to the other person)

I sent her a little bit rude note, because I was disappointed.

Is this totally my fault? 16 hours are too late to pay for the item?
Should I even appolozise to her for my previous mail? I don't mean to insult the seller or anything by writing this, but I really wonder and sad...mostly feeling betrayed. (I know it's weired to feel that way.)
Maybe just want to share to ease my sadness...

depends on if the seller requires immediate payment or not. if they do yes what happened is normal. if they do not require it, it's not. just get in the habit of paying before you receive an invoice and pay right after you buy the item. saves the trouble.

The seller didn't mention immediate payment and I usually pay right away when I received the invoice.

How did I pay if I don't get invoice though? Do I ask the seller's paypal address? (it's the same thing if I can't check email for the seller's reply..right?)

Well, I guess the item was not meant to be mine after all. Thanks for the comments, I need to get this out of my chest.

It's AF, and as I posted above, I thought getting an invoice was the normal way. so I asked her to send me an invoice. I thought getting an invoice was me promising her that I buy her stuff. (of couse I was wrong, or she needed the payment right away and/or she had somebody already talking to)

Oh, don't get me wrong, I have no bad feeling about her. she was nice. But I was just thinking why can't she waited at least a day, and now why i didn't ask her paypal address so that I can pay right away when I logged on last night.

Mall Etiquette is always a sticky situation. For me, if I want an item, I ask the seller to invoice me- in my eyes, that is essentially a "promise" that I will purchase the item. I usually pay the moment I receive the invoice (which could be the moment I check my mail when it comes). As a seller, I expect to be paid within 24 hours of sending the invoice and I state it in the PM as such when I let the buyer know I've invoiced them. Almost 100% of my buyers pay within that time frame and if they don't, I give them a reminder and give more time to pay unless someone else is interested in the jean. I let them know that as well after 24 hours.

For me, if I really want an item, I will want to pay for it ASAP so the seller can send it out. I always pay my invoices within 24 hours as well, if not instantly if both the seller and I are on AF and exchanging PMs.

I don't think 16 hrs is too slow, unless the seller specified that payment should be sent immediately. People do have other things to take care of.

I always try to pay asap but due to the time difference a little delay is not unusual (like 16 hrs).

I always wait for the invoice too. I give the seller my email and wait for the invoice. I try to pay as soon as I can, but I don't constantly check my email.

Sellers I've purchased from in the past typically give a time period. I don't mind if they practice a "First one to send payment gets it", because at least I'm aware of their selling methods and won't feel gypped a few hours later when someone else has bought the item. I think communication is key. What is frustrating is when someone doesn't give you a timeline, invoices you and as you're about to pay...you realize they've cancelled it because someone before you just paid.

As a buyer, if I can't pay as soon as possible (say for instance, I know I will be gone to work for the whole day) I'll make sure to mention when I will be able to make the payment.

Edit: oh, and I don't think 16 hours is too long either. ;) That is if the seller didn't mention a time frame in which she'd like to be paid.

Thank you Emily.
I was thinking the same time frame and same manner you described should be done. But oh, well...

Next time, I will try paying before getting invoices or tell sellers to allow me 24hours to pay as sometimes I can't log onto the computer during the daytime to avoid disappointment.

as a seller, i wouldn't have 2 invoices out for the same item at the same time.
not unless the first buyer were aware that it's a first come first serve basis, or i had specifically given the first person a time frame in which to pay...and they exceeded it.

I think it was quite shady of the seller to do that to you. 16 isn't even a full day...

She should have given you at least 24 hours. I know that multiple invoices being sent out for the same item has been discussed before and it was dicouraged, if not prohibited. Unless she explicitly said that the first person to pay would get them, then the seller is in the wrong IMO. We can't sit by our computers and wait for invoices.

agreed.

16 hrs is not a long time if you weren't given a specific time frame of when payment was expected.

Asking for an invoice is essentially the start of the sale process. IMO, when someone asks to be invoiced, they are promising to buy my item. The seller should have invoiced you, and if you could not pay in say, 24 hours, ask for the item to be held for longer than that, or make some other payment agreement.

I do sales on a first-come, first-served basis, and that means the first person to ask for an invoice, not the first person to PM me or as a question, etc. I reserve my item for whoever asks to be invoiced first, and then I start a "wait list" if necessary if there is further interest. But, I always let the first potential buyer know that there are others waiting for the item if they cannot pay in a timely manner or if they change their mind.

There is no reason to have two invoices out IMO.

Unless prior agreement, 24 hours really ought to be enough for payment.
THEN I would cancel that invoice and move on, if I were to operate in such a shitty way. (I make agreements before hand)
No one can expect people to be poised at their PC 24/7 to pay instantaneously.
Who is this seller?

I agree that I wouldn't have sent two invoices out. Maybe the seller thought you were going to flake (total bad assumption especially since it had been less than a full day) because you aren't a reguluar poster... Doesn't make it right, I am just guessing here.

Additionally, many of us cannot log onto PayPal during the day because of restrictions on our work computers. I think 24 hours should be the norm. Aside from that, I would usually email someone and say "Hey, I haven't heard back from you on that invoice. Are you planning on paying and how soon because I have someone else who is interested in the item. Thanks!"

I usually give buyers here 3 days, then I send a reminder and ask them to let me know if they don't want the item because I have someone else interested in it. If I don't hear from them then I cancel the invoice and send it to the other person. Oddly enough, both times this has happened (the second time just this weekend, though that's kind of a weird story) I did have a 2nd person, which was nice because I wasn't left hanging with the jeans and wondering where the hell my buyer went.

But yeah, she should have given you a timeframe or at least told you it's first come first serve.

I agree w/ what Nola, Anna and Joan said. There is really no reason to have multiple invoices out at the same time unless you have multiples of the same item.

thanks for posting this as it reminds me that I won an auction a few days ago and have yet to receive an invoice. Now, eBay is acting weird for me and I can't get into my eBay to request another invoice. I am quite pissed as this item is to be a Christmas present.

ETA: We have discussed this at length before regarding AF mall purchases. It always ends in a heated debate. No seller here should send out multiple invoices without alerting each potential buyer. Not cool.
