Cell Phone Help

Alright, I did some searching all over the internet and couldn't find any answers, so I figured I'd try you guys.

I have wireless service with Verizon right now, and I am thinking about transferring to AT&T. I want to keep my number. Now comes the (possibly) complicated part. My Verizon service was originally issued when I lived out of state, and I have kept the same number for a few years. Basically I don't have a local area code. AT&T's website is telling me I'm not eligible for a number transfer, and honestly I don't understand SIM cards and Ports and all that, so I'm wondering if there is a way around it. I can't be the only one, right?

Thanks in advance for any advice!
I need nothing!

I had Alltel when I lived in Louisiana. Then my family moved to Kentucky and I went off to college in upstate New York and wanted to switch to Verizon. I went through a similar situation trying to keep my number. Basically, the only way it can be done is over the phone from my experience. You'll might get transferred around a bit but I'm sure if my crazy situation was worked out, they can work yours out as well. So just give AT&T a call and explain your situation and hopefully they can help you out.

You have to get a number in the area code where you bought the phone for the first 30 or 60 days you own the phone, i forget, but after that you can change it back to your old area code.
