Man trampled to death in Black Friday rush

NEW YORK, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- A male worker at a New York Wal-Mart was killed Friday when anxious shoppers trampled him in their rush for Black Friday bargains, witnesses say.

Witnesses to the early morning incident in Valley Stream, N.Y., said the unidentified worker had been attempting to hold back a wave of customers after the store opened, only to be knocked down and trampled underfoot, the New York Daily News said.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," Jimmy Overby, a co-worker of the man's, said. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

Police said the incident was being investigated and the body would be analyzed to determine the official cause of death.

Meanwhile, shopper Jessica Keyes said she miscarried after being knocked down by her fellow shoppers at the same Wal-Mart.

She told the Daily News that paramedics informed her she had lost her unborn child from the violent collision.

"There's nothing we can do. The baby is gone," she quoted the paramedics as saying.

in regards to the woman though, if I'd have been pregnant, I wouldn't have had the courage to try to get in the shopping masses :S

Yeah, this is what I am thinking. This sort of behaviour is common in refugee camps when aid workers start getting low on supplies and these people are starving to death. How can you live with yourself knowing you walked all over someone (and killed them) just to save a few dollars.

Oh, they do? Wow, I had no idea.

That just makes me feel sick. Are people so insane they'd kill someone for electronics, sheets, or whatever the hell is on sale? I'm glad I stayed in today. Nothing is worth having to fight it out over.

This is absolutely horrible and repulses me to think ANYONE could actually be that ruthless and pushy just to get to a good deal....I am also glad I didn't even attempt to go out today.

I can't imagine what purchase was so important that a man had to lose his life and a woman had to lose her unborn baby.

That's utterly repulsive. A wal-mart? seriously? Not that any location would suffice for such actions but honestly:

"OMFG 30% OFF CAP'N CRUNCH?!??!?! GET THE F_CK OUT OF MY WAY!!!"

Really?.. I mean REALLY?
How can you step on someone else for like a new blender or discounted bedsheets for f_cking Christ's sake? I've pretty much given up hope on the human race as a whole. Reading that put me in a huge downer.

Am I the only one not surprised by any of this? Tragic indeed, but this sort of crowd behavior could hardly be considered rare during this season, and this sort of selfish indifference as bred by rampant consumerism always has the potential for tragic results. I remember being in NYC on 42nd and 7th when the lines for the Wii stretched 5 blocks. Amidst the chaos (which is precisely what it was) an exiting buyer was stabbed. All Wii customers leaving the store thereafter required individualized police escort.

As someone that's worked @ walmart before (and shopped there on black friday), I am not surprised AT ALL. When you wrk at walmart, you see how crazy people are. Especially the people who got there to shop on Christmas eve at 7pm and get mad because walmart is actually closing.

I like how the Toys R Us shoppers scrambled into another business: 1. Go to my car and drive home or as far away as possible to safety 2. Check out another business, let things cool down and continue bargain hunting
