Photography advice - reviews? D40, D80, A3XXX

Hey guys! I currently have a Sony Alpha A100 DSLR and I've been looking into buying a new camera. So far I've narrowed down my choices to Nikon D40, D80, or a Sony A300.... For those who are photography saavy.... which would you recommend?

I like the A300 series because of the Live View screen, which will come in handy for me but not really a necessity....

I can get a great deal for a D40, but I will be going from 10MP down to 6MP... other than printing out huge pictures, are there any downsides from going from 10 to 6MP?

What are the main benefits of the D80 vs D40?

Thanks for any advice

Good question !! I think the best person to answer this question is Pacosdad !! Where is he hiding ?? He owns D80. You should check his work in Photo thread !

Are you sure you not mistaken Nikon D40 for Canon 40D ?? If I were you I'd think how much you want to spend first!! I wouldn't recommend buying D40, its going back. Not good IMO. You should look into D80,D90 or Canon 40D which is the best amateur DSLR out there right now. and Forget about Sony, they're ok but not as good as Nikon or Canon.

With release of Nikon D90 and Canon 50D, previous models are gonna drop in price, I hope.(Nikon D80 and Canon 40D).

Here is a few web site you can check reviews on , I find them very helpful !

I have the D90 and I adore it; go for the D80. It's worth the investment.

The main differences with each newer model are things like a bigger viewing screen, more features in terms of picture quality, etc. The D90 has video capability in HD as well; otherwise, the changes are not that significant. Of course, newer models have higher megapixels. . The log screen feature is a huge bonus, but I'm not sure the D80 has that.

Hey don't worry about megapixel...they don't really mean anything to me...and I've been shooting fashion photography for the last 5 years...a lot of my works were done with a 6 years old 6 megapixel camera and the results are far more better than someone with a 12 or 14 megapixel camera...you should check out Digital Camera Reviews and News: Digital Photography Review: Forums, Glossary, FAQ and compare the 2 cameras...remember, higher megapixel on a small image sensor = noisier images...

I would also like to add ... I have taken nearly 30,000 photos with mine so I have definitely put it to the test. If I had to buy another camera right now it would be a D80 or a D90 for sure.

Yeah. Majority of the photos were for my business. Only about 3000 - 4000 were taken for non business use.

D40 won't autofocus with Nikon AF lens so at the very least I would for a D80. But if you can swing the extra few hundred dollars for the D90 then you might as well for the bigger screen, HD video, Live View and better sensor (close to D300's image quality and High ISO quality).

The D90 is definitely out of my price range.. I think I'm going to go with the cheaper D40 body (or D40x) and save up money for some good lenses. I can always upgrade to a newer, better body later

Thanks for all the advice!

We just got the D40....thought it was time to upgrade from the old cannon rebel. They were having a good package deal and figured since we were switching brands to start low.

Just discovered a 40% off ebay coupon in my inbox I'm seriously considering buying a camera tonight. Hate to beat a dead horse but, Rebel XSi or D80? Advantages/disadvantages? Sucks that I can't try them out in person

How exactly does that cashback thing work? Is it instant?

I may just say fuck it and do that, its the only way I'll stop stressing. Right now I'm scrounging around my room looking for birthday money from relatives. With that I might just barely make it
