Advice on what to wear to Thanksgiving

My Thanksgiving situatuion is this: I'm going to my sister's house. It's also her husbands' 40 th B-day party. My Mom and Step-dad are flying in. My sister's husbands' Dad and wife are coming, as well as some other of his relatives I don't know. So...I want to make a great first impression(so I don't want to be too casual)..but I don't want to look too dressed up either. Basically, I want to look fashionable and of course drop dead gorgeous...any advice?

Well... if you want to be safe, you should ask the others if they're going casual or dressing up. I would say jeans w/heels or boots and a nice top should be fine.

unless they specify that its a dressed up occasion, i would wear a great pair of dark jeans with a silk top and a blazer in case its chilly

I say show off a pair of jeans and pair it with a nicer top or sweater depending on where you live.

boot or heels should add a dressier effect. Nice necklace/earring...your all set

I agree with the others though and just touch base with the family to make sure they too will be nicely but not overly dressing up...

My first thought when reading the title was to answer a bib!
but I think the other suggestions work too.

I agree with the other posters, ask first, but a pair of nice jeans and a dressy top with heels should be nice. Oh and just simple accessories.

That would definitely make a lasting impression!

Relax OP and just be you. Nobody will be there from the Fashion Police ready to make a citizens arrest. You'll probably be the most stylish person there.

I had to pick my outfit bc I had to pack up before heading home...I'm wearing my sugarplum flynts, a Juicy cashmere sweater and pointy toe ankle boots (unless I find some better and slightly less beaten up shoes at NR today )

I agree, a nice shirt and a dressy trouser jean with a blazer would look smart.

sorry if this is a threadcrap but I've never been to anyone house for dinner and been able to keep my shoes on but I noticed a lot of people were recommending shoes, is it it culturally acceptable in the states (or maybe even here) to wear shoes in someone's house?

That sounds really cute; it'll probably work. =) Just be REALLY careful with gravy and what not.

I lived in a "shoes off" house as a kid, so I have a very strict "shoes on" policy in my house as an adult. I believe the rule is to conform to whatever the house rule is or ask. At the very LEAST, wipe your shoes well. Tramping dirt and slush through someone's home is never socially acceptable.

I don't let people wear shoes at my house, but at my grandmas we wear shoes...

Just depends

I never wear my shoes in anyone's house...whether they have a "shoes off" policy or not. I feel weird wearing my shoes in a house.

It never even occured to me to ask someone to remove their shoes ... I assume they've wiped their feet and we really don't have any carpet anyway (I hate carpet). I can't remember ever being asked to either.

I think it is more of a Canadian thing. We are very fussy about the cleanliness of our igloos.

My igloo has wooden floors so you have to take you shoes off at my house or my husband blows an artery...

While he is gone I don't ask people to take off their shoes all the time, but the days it snows AKA right now, you have too or chance ruining the floors

The vast majority of people I know allow shoes in the home, My aunt is the only person I know who has always had a no shoes in house rule b/c of white carpet. It just depends on the house so don't assume one way or another, just ask the host.
