Question halp! I need a dress for a black tie event

I am looking for a dress for important black tie event next month, under $500 and I was thinking something short?

I feel silly but I have no idea what to wear that would be appropriate. If you guys can help me pick out something I would really appreciate it

We have a black tie event tomorrow night actually. I wore this dress to it last year with loads of pearls from JCrew
Ruched V Neck Dress

This year, I'm wearing a full length, plum colored, satin spaghetti strap gown. Its a faux wrap with ruching and satin covered buttons at the side. I can't find a picture of it anywhere on the internet If I remember, I'll take a picture before we leave tomorrow night. Ooh, we're FB friends...I'm wearing it in one of the very first pics (oldest) in my "Photos and video of you" folder. Can't remember how much of the dress is actually showing though...

Black tie can mean cocktail dress and it can mean gown...at least around here...I tend to over dress rather than under dress when at all possible. What type of event is it?

Girl! The world is your oyster. I would go with a dark color if you are going to do short. Black, Navy or a dark gray. You should be able to find a ton of cute dresses in your price range. Check out Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales.

It is a nice dress but somehow it makes model's figure to look a bit awkward, like the legs are too short or something.. I think it is not an easy length+neckline combo to pull off.

Kimoy, my bet would be Roland Mouret's type of dress?

I think if you are going to go short, it should be somewhat drapey, with NO cleavage showing. Maybe a one shoulder silk or chiffon style. Black, plum, or navy would be best, but no matter what color a black heel is a must. Search for styles from designers like Halston, Badgley Mischka, or David Meister, etc for inspiration and then find similar dresses that you like from less expensive designers.

A little over budget, but maybe something with a similar shape http://www.net-a-porter.com/am/produ..._xuHu7u_yViP4A

Jennifer I like that dress but not a fan of rouching Im very classic I guess

I love that net a porter dress might be worth going over budget.

What else we have ladies

I think black is the best way to go

What about a silhouette like this? With your gorgeous curves it would be sexy while still being very Lady-like. Just an example:Tina Dress Black L.K.Bennett

What is the vision in your head?

i think you should err on the side of more formal/conservative considering the event and the time of year. to me, black tie = longer length.

Robert Rodriguez Black Label Rosie V-Neck Gown - Neiman Marcus

Robert Rodriguez Black Label Karmen Draped Gown - Neiman Marcus

Tadashi Shoji One-Shoulder Lace Gown - Neiman Marcus

ABS - Lace Gown - Saks.com

For me, I would go full length, but it is totally acceptable to go shorter. Just keep all the girl parts covered

thanks for all the suggestions guys! I am trying to narrow down all the great links you posted!

Now Im wondering Kate may be right, due to the type of event and time of year? but Im 5'4 sometimes I feel like drowned in a long dress.

Since its a republican event the girly parts will be covered

what do you guys think?

Also I saw this dress (since Im obsessed with jcrew) any thoughts?

in back or navy ?

Women's new arrivals - dresses - Marguerite dress in silk charmeuse - J.Crew

I think you'd look great in the navy dress.. but I am not too sure if it's appropriate for your event? It is too playful somehow

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. I just got really excited because I love navy dress clothes. I'll look this afternoon if it slows down some.
