inexpensive, petite, office attire?

I have a feeling I'll end up working somewhere with office attire, and don't have much of a budget for getting work clothes. I hope to find a couple pairs of frankie b slacks (if they ever pop up on ebay), but was hoping someone could tell me where to look in the mall for cheaper options, that are still cut nicely. I've tried on stuff from anne taylor loft in the past, but the pants I tried were really short. Kind of want to get a blazer/knee length skirt too. (and shoes, wtf kind of shoes do you wear with that stuff? GAaaaah! I'd rather do manual labor... but that's not really an option. Totally more in my comfort zone though.

Thanks!

I work in an office and I tend to border on the casual and wear capris, tshirts (nice solid ones), some button downs but my 'girls' give me problems sometimes, sweaters, dressier pants, corduroys and jeans on Fridays. I don't do skirts. I get my stuff on ebay but buy Aeropostale capris (not cargo ones often), Limited, even Old Navy you can get stuff on the clearance racks. I can get away w/ wearing the ON skinny cargos w/ my knee high boots (thought our new and 'improved' dress code was going to put a stop to this).

Most of my shoes have heels but they aren't 'pumps' ... I wear a lot of wedges, sometimes my black DM mary janes, boots.

ETA: today I'm wearing a pair of black capris, a solid blue tshirt from JCP and a pair of black wedge sandals. I'm definitely not the dressiest person at our office but by no means the most casual.

My friend Jill is petite and buys most of her work clothes at express or target. They have a pretty decent section for work clothes, especially the lines that work with well known designers. And they have 00 I believe.

Stacy you mean petite as in small sizes, right, not short?

^ right. I'm "shorter" but not "short". 31ish is my ideal inseam. I just don't want to look frumpy in things that are too wide. This is alien territory for me, and I don't like it one bit!

You could always try H&M, too. They have that whole European Sizing thing going on, their stuff tends to run quite small.

^ I love H&M! Sadly, the closest store is about 8 hours away. I wish that you could order online.

I work in an office and always get away with wearing my black BFF leggings.. it's pretty easy to make them look work appropriate.
I love White House Black Market ( < eBay only, their prices are insane) for tops & Express for pants & blazers. They both have XXS tops. Express slacks start at 00 and come in every length. Really really recommend those! Altering sucks
Express isn't really all that inexpensive either, not in the store. :\ Sorry..
I would go with getting all your work clothes on eBay, that's what I do

Sz 2 Frankie B slacks right now for $23, shipped. I don't know if I'm allowed to link this right here..? It's not my listing.

^ Thanks. Not sure if the 2 will be too big, but I'll give them a shot if they stay cheap. The only thing I've gotten from express was a 0 and huge (on eBay, so I couldn't send it back) so I'm wary of shopping online w/o being able to try things on. Once I figure out what I'm looking for, I'll definitely use eBay.

if you go express i recommend waiting til they the stuff goes on sale. like recently they had 40-50% off their dress shirts for guys and then they have coupons for like 15 off 30, 25 off 50 or 75, 30 off 100, etc... so i got 4 shirts and then used 50 off 150. and the shirts came out to like 25 dollars each.

stacy you won't fit in the express 00 either, they fall off of me and you're def smaller than i am . i've had the best luck with banana republic petite pants- my inseam is a 30.25 and they are just a smidge long on me. if you can get to a store give them a try. ann taylor loft is too short for me as well in regards to pants, but the 00 or 0 would def work for skirts or some sort of crop pant. (The dresses are nice too.)

You could also get some stuff from Forever 21 to hold you over until you find some better quality things for cheap.

Do you have a consignment store close to you? After I stopped working, I took about 30 suits to my consignment store and each suit was probably worth $1000 since I had a senior executive job and needed a big wardrobe. They sold them for $100 each (pants and jacket) which was a great deal for people my size. I know a lot of other people who take expensive well-made clothes to consignment stores so that could be an option for you….

^ I'll definitely check around.

Found a cute h&m pants/blazer set on eBay and got excited b/c they listed it as a 2... but it was a 6 and they said it fit like a 2 I hate when people do that.

It's really going to depend on the particular office environment what's appropriate. IMO leggings, capris, or more jean-like trousers aren't appropriate for business casual, but it might work in a particular office. A few of the secretaries in my office wear stuff like that but I think it's slightly unprofessional...then again, who cares.

I've found Express 00 short pants to fit fine - they're on the baggy side but in a flattering way. Ann Taylor loft is hit or miss for me, Banana Republic 0P or 00P is great but pricier. H&M is great for tops but I've never really liked their work pants.

For shoes, I usually go with plain pumps (like the Target Pearce I've been wearing a lot lately) unless I'm wearing a skirt and want a more interesting shoe. Nice flats work, too, I just (personally) feel too young in flats because I'm short.

The Express 00s are too big IMO. They look like pajamas on me. I think H&M 2s fit smaller than any mall store's 00, but the pants always seem to fit me weird there. I see a lot of business attire in all sizes on clearance at TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Filene's, Loemann's, etc. regularly though.

i think you might have some luck at express, its hit or miss for me with the sizes. also, some of LOFTs pants have a longer inseam, which may work for you. if you want to wear skirts, you'll find some that fit much easier because you can just shop in the petite section of Ann Taylor, BR, etc. AT has some amazing sales. I have the target versie pumps in nude patent, which work fine. I like the Ann Taylor Perfect pumps, and they go on sale for around $70 pretty often. I love j.crew cardigans and throw them over everything, and you can get them on ebay for pretty cheap. I could go on, lol

Nope, I didn't see them. I haven't been on eBay as much lately.

Thanks Amber. I'm gonna have to get brave and take the boys out for a hellish shopping trip soon.

Are you sure that the office you'll gonna end up with will require you to wear office attire? I mean, there are offices that are not strict on dress codes so I guess it's better to ask than spend some money and in the end, you might not wear them at all. I had that experience before, so now, I'm wearing jeans in my office.

Petite Fashion Advice

The fact is that as the size of the average American has increased; clothing sizes have decreased (read my entry that talks in greater detail about this issue). Furthermore, manufacturers use fit models to “represent” the largest number of consumers possible and if you fall outside of the size range of the fit models, like 90% of the people in the world, you’re not going to be able to wear things straight off the rack. However, all is not lost—find a good tailor and you’ll be well on your way to proper fitting fashion. In fact, prior to the 1970s, getting a piece tailored to fit you was a pretty common clothing care procedure. Most department stores offered free tailoring.
