are Japanese Raw Jeans really better than Western's?

I have been seeing lots people talk about how great japanese raw jeans are..and kinda disrespect brand like APC, Nudie, Atelier, and etc..

Those brand use high quality fabric/ denim to produce thier jeans..and some of them even use Japanese denim..then why it matters at all? for example..like Nudie uses japanese denim for their selavge jeans...and some organic denim from Turkey ..and of course some italian denim..and the fabric from other counties are good-quality too. For me, jeans are not all about the fabric, design and cut should be taken into account as well.. and one thing I never go with those Japanses brands is cuz lack of style..they kinda focus more on the fabric instead of design...would people really buy a pair of jeans just for the fabric itself? No disrespect to Japanses brands...I just like to know what you guys think ...

There is a variety of great designs/cuts available in Japanese denim brands like Samurai, Flathead, Imperial etc... probably any cut you would possibly want is available.

I have Nudies, Flatheads and Samurais ... quality wise, there is no contest. Everything about my FH and Sammies are better then the Nudies. The nudies are Selvedge made in Italy. They are definitely high quality but when compared to the others the difference is clear.

Nothing against Nudies, APC etc but if I was going to drop that much money on a pair that I would be wearing for an extended amount of time I would rather go with 1 of the Japanese brands.

the raw materials, the weave of the denim, the construction of the jeans themselves, the details... all far superior wit the Japanese brands I have experience with. It's impossible to say "all japenese brands are better" because they have tons of crappy brands too but you can't go wrong with Flathead or Samurai's.

I'd like to get a pair of Japanese denim eventually...

But for the time being, being broke as hell, I'm happy enough with the western brands. Nudie and Naked & Famous work fine by me, as long as I can catch them on sale or slightly used.

Price is a factor for me...and I don't have to have the biggest and best, but I do like having something that gets the job done well. Western brands fulfill that want pretty well for me, and if I look in the right places I can get a pair for 1/3rd to 1/6th the price of a brand new pair of Japanese Jeans.

It all depends on your situation and what's important to you. If you have the means and want the good stuff...by all means...get the "good stuff". I can't speak from experience, but it's probably worth it. If you don't have the means, there's no shame in getting the "next step down". It's still quality stuff that should last many years of use.

people like the design in high end japanese denim, there's lots of small artisanal details that jeans like nudies and apc don't have. It's not really due to it being produced in japan though, it's because of the price point. The japanese brands they rave about are often 300+ dollars, of course they're better than apc and nudies that sell for half the price - otherwise nobody would buy them. It's just better fabric, construction, and details - all of which drive up the price, but make them a better pair of jeans.

People don't hate all Western denim though. APC actually gets a fair amount of love considering it's price point, and Atelier is considered to be on par with japanese. I think nudies doesn't get much love since it's so mainstream and the branding is so obvious. Other western brands that get a lot of love include ande whall, jean shop, wings + horns, levi's LVC line, Imperial, MII dior (although not as much as MIJ dior, but they cost like $100 less), denim demon, acne, julian red, RRL, blue blood, 3sixteen, and some vintage style jeans from lee, wrangler, and pace.

as you can see there are plenty of western brands that people like.

oh and you said:
"would people really buy a pair of jeans just for the fabric itself"
well sort of, that's why people are buying raw denim instead of just regular jeans. But obviously you don't spend a lot of money on jeans that you think has an ugly cut; they prefer the cut over something like nudies. And there's plenty of slim japanese denim, so it's not like everything is vintage style.

^ some of those non-japanese brands do actually use japanese denim, just manufacture the jeans elsewhere (RRL for example)

Didn't realize that was what the question was about, I thought it was more about where it was manufactured and where the company that designed it was located. A lot of "japanese denim" has the cotton imported from elsewhere, it's just woven in japan. For example some brands have cotton from Africa, woven into denim in Japan, and manufactured in the US. I don't really consider those to be japanese raw jeans, since they're constructed elsewhere; but I understand how one could.

Cone Denim from the U.S. is well regarded. People seem to like Zimbabwe cotton as well. Part of the thing is that people like selvage denim and cone denim is the only manufacturer of selvage denim on this side of the hemisphere (according to selfedge)

I've gradually made a transition from Diesels to PRPS. Awesome washes + higher rise (that's what I prefer for aesthetic reasons)

Japanese raws are unbeatable, if bought for the right price

man those flatheads are hawt. they got fading just like Diors which run up to ~$400.

How much do flatheads usually go for? and I agree Japanese denim is far superior to western stuff, I swear I could rub mud onto my Evisus and it's just rub right off because the denim is so heavy. It's also the little things like the stiching detail.

except the denim on those Flat Heads will last 10x as long as a pair of washed Diors! Even compared to my raw 19cm's the 14.5 oz denim of the Flat Heads is far superior. That's a 3001/f310 cut and they retail around $280, depending on the yen exchange rate

True. I have a couple of Dior 21's that I bought exclusively because of their great fit. The denim is average, though

I've seen good results from APC and Naked & Famous.

Score 'em slightly used and you can get 'em real cheap.

If you have time to read: superfuture :: supertalk :: so, i'm having a pair of jeans made . . . .

It's the things like these that set companies apart. In general, the workmanship in Japan is higher than other countries (perfectionistic mindset is fairly common in Japan).
