When I was in highschool (well, technically middle school, but 7th-12th were all in the same building), I chose Iomega stock, because I heard they were coming out with this nifty 100MB removable drive called the Zip. We had "$100,000" to play with, and I bought 50,000 shares for about a buck a share in February or so. By May it was up near $50 a share and my total portfolio was was over $2.5 million by the end of the school year.
The next highest-earning kid had like just under $300,000. Good Times.
I also got my step-uncle some dough when suggestion AMD stock when the Athlon processor was due to come out. He wussed out after a 3x gain, but should have held on longer... oh well.
Wow I totally threadcrapped. I should go to bed.
