Silly question about patching

So I'm about to patch the distressed spot in the knee of my Nakitas. I've never done this before so um.. I have a silly question. Should I use a big piece and iron around the edges only and not iron over the actual distressed spot? Oh, I'm using this white iron-on patch from Joann's. TIA!

I posted pics of repairing and patching on the inside of jeans, run a search. I think it was in GD...
Use fabric and Wonder-Under, dont use the pre packaged patches

I already bought the white patch though.. hmm.. I will probably check out the Wunder Under stuff too, kinda curious.

So just to clarify, I should activate (iron) the adhesive stuff on the white threading/hole too? Originally I was thinking I should only cover the area surrounding the white threading but not the actual threading/hole.

Sorry to bring up a dead thread but I also had the same question as member gatorfan. Do you activate the wonder under directly over the distressed area or just around the outter edges of the patch.

It sounds like (and after reading the referenced thread with Joan's pics) everyone has been activating the entire patch underneath, so the patch/wonder under bonds to the threads as well. I don't know if you could just reinforce the edges (well you could, but don't know how well it would prevent ripping), but maybe use a skin-colored fabric as the patch if you don't want the show-through to be white?
