Basically FLAT RATE means ONE PRICE regardless of weight..WITHIN parameters of course
The 'added weight of tape' should make no difference whatsoever.

Oh, i forgot to note, that when putting it in the tyvek, i put the bottom of the jeans (where the point of the flap is) toward the bottom of the bag. Waistband at the top.

For flat rate domestic Priority mail it's a 70 pound weight limit...unless you're shipping bars of lead in the flat rate, don't worry about the weight limit.

However for international, a 4 pound weight limit applies, but most pairs of jeans are anywhere from 2 to 3-ish pounds total weight including envelope and customs forms etc...so no worries there.

I use Joan's folded in crotch method of folding jeans and fold them to a little less than the dimension of the width of the flat rate envelope. The crotch is the most important part to get it that nice rectangular shape.

Just fold the jeans into 1/4's. and put it in with the top of the back pocket facing to the right side of the envelope.

Only pairs I could not fit w/ this method were stiff denim like Whiskey creek. Also I wouldn't recommend shipping dry denim like this.

DMM section 123 Priority Mail Rates and Eligibility for Retail Letters, Flats and Parcels:

DMM 123 Priority Mail Rates and Eligibility for Retail Letters, Flats, and Parcels

please refer to section 1.5

Quote:
Any amount of material may be mailed in a USPS-produced Priority Mail flat-rate box or flat-rate envelope. When sealing a flat-rate box or flat-rate envelope, the container flaps must be able to close within the normal folds. Tape may be applied to the flaps and seams to reinforce the container, provided the design of the container is not enlarged by opening the sides and the container is not reconstructed in any way.

I've wondered that too....what could possibly be 70lbs and go into a flat rate envelope? A bar of gold? coins maybe?
