Thanks for the guide BabyJ - hemmed my first pair and they turned out awesome. My husband couldn't even tell I'd hemmed them (aside from the fact that they're no longer dragging on the floor. )

Yah for you, it is a fantastic way to hem jeans. I haven't seen any pics of crowns in the r&r section or any coh.

what kind of thread are we supposed to use to hem jeans? there's like 100% cotton, 100% polyester, cotton AND polyester blend, etc.

and does drug stores have sewing machine threads? (it's just easier to get to than a craft store...)

thanks.

You can use any kind of thread - I just buy whatever is on sale, lol. Hm, I don't think drug stores have sewing machines. Places like Walmart and Target will have them though.

how do you jeans "flow" after you do this? Does the bottom of the jean feel bulky and creat a round circle for the opeing? or does it fall and flow like any other hem?

anyone with pics wearing their jeans after being hemmed this way?

has anyone tried, or does anyone know how to hem VB destroyed roths? the distressing is so unique on the bottom of the hems that I don't want to lose it, but I need around 3.5 inches off...if i try to hem (even by keeping the original hem) I'll be cutting off the distressing since it's above the hem. Can anyone give me advice, or is it hopeless?

P.S., this is my first sewing experience

Here are pics of the hems:

is there anyway to line up the side seams so it doesnt look very obvious that it's been hemmed? i need to hem about 7 inches on general for my flats jeans and even on small bootcuts (R&R phoenix) they dont match up and become slightly crumply. like a bigger bit being stuffed into a smaller opening.

If you're hemming that much, you will need to take in the leg a little bit, and then cut away the excess when you're done to prevent the bulk.

actually, did any of your needles bend when you're hemming the inseams part(the extremely thick part of the hems?)

i bend 2 needles and still cant get more than a stitch through. and i was using the thickest needles i own(no.18)

I just read through this thread, and I am inspired to try this. I got a brand new sewing machine for Christmas, and it's just been sitting in the box since then. I was too scared to try it. I only need to hem R&R's, and since I have a new pair coming this week, I think I will have to practice. I haven't had a tailor hem one correctly for me yet. Wish me luck!

So, I just spent all night learning how to use a sewing machine so I could hem my R&R. It was hard, but I was teaching myself, and had no clue about anything! It took me forever just to thread the machine and needle, and I had to change needles too.

But I am pretty proud of myself. I think they turned out all right. When I measure them, both legs seem even, but then when I put them on, my right leg seems longer than the left. I don't know if it's super noticeable, but I am wondering how hard it is to rip out the hemming and do it again? Is it worth it?

Okay I read the thread and sorry if I missed talk of this but what type/brand/model of sewing machine does everyone use? I know babyj said the older ones would be better but I'd have to buy one and I'm not sure what to get!

Any machine that can sew denim will work just fine (it will say on the box whether it can sew through denim)
