Scamming buyer help

Hey guys. I recently sold an iTunes giftcard on eBay. The buyer asked for me to email him the code after I sold it, which I did, and we left positive feedback for each other. A few days later, they emailed me and said that someone hacked their eBay and Paypal and it wasn't them who made the purchase. They filed fraud with Paypal and now the funds are on hold until I can provide proof of shipment. Should I just ship the card and provide the tracking? Or am I fucked here?

The latter, sorry to say. There is no coverage for virtual goods, seller protection requires a shipped item, with tracking proof of delivery. And shipping something after the date a dispute was filed is not going to hold up.

Someone similar to this happened to me many years ago where I emailed the info instead of sending the item. Paypal does not protect items that are not shipped (something to those terms). Same thing the owner of the account said their account was hacked and they did not authorize the payment. They took my money and lesson learned. At least in my situation there was nothing I could do. I hope this works out for you tho but my experience was not so good and it was hundreds of dollars

i find it rather convenient that the guys ebay AND paypal were hacked. unless he uses the same password for both (which sadly he probably does) it seems unlikely to me. Sounds like your SOL, though. Lesson learned, hopefully it wasnt too much $$?

FML. It was $100...So should I not sell gift cards on eBay at all or should I be physically shipping them?

What happened to you is a common gift card scam. I would never send anything digitally unless it was worthless. You should physically ship anything of value that you sell w/ tracking or sig confirm so you can at least fight unauthorized chargebacks BUT it is not going to protect you from other types of scams. If buyer gets the card and claims it is empty ... well good luck.

any good scammer is just going to use a throw away e-mail, so signing them up for stuff is only going to waste your time.

well this is true

You might also refer to this thread, specifically 3 post down from Pam. There are links to various reporting agencies. I would report the person to those. They have been successful at recovering some money/items from scammers.
