package came with postage due, seller is basically saying tough s*!t ... what to do?

i searched and couldn't find anything to do with this problem except for one situation where it was a mall item and so everything was taken care of

i purchased jeans on ebay and they came today with postage due of $4.10 which i paid out of pocket to the mail carrier (only other option was to refuse the package)

i messaged the seller .. (i didn't even get into the fact that there was no way in hell the jeans were going to fit into a priority flat rate small box )

me
Quote:
hi, i received these jeans today but they came with postage due of $4.10 which i had to pay to accept the jeans. you paid and printed postage for a USPS priority flat rate "small" box (which is given out by the post office) but you shipped in a standard gift box so the post office charged more. Please refund me through my original paypal payment, thank you
seller messaged me back
Quote:
What refund you talking about? This is weirdest request we ever got! You bet on this item and it's means that you agree with the conditions of this transaction including shipping.I don't know where you get these numbers of shipping.Sorry, but I don't understand what I should refund to you?!You had received item in 3days by priority mail.
I don't see anything else I can do for you.
ummmm... listening much

i message back
Quote:
hi, i'm sorry, i must have not been clear. the jeans arrived today. but i had to pay $4.10 out of my pocket. they came postage due because you shipped them in a regular package, not in the flat rate priority small box that you paid to ship them in. the mail carrier needed $4.10 postage due from me to accept the package from you. the only other option was for me to refuse the package and they would have sent it back to you. i am asking you to refund me the $4.10 that i had to pay out of my pocket that i did not agree to when i purchased them from you. sorry if i was not clear in my first message.
in all the years of purchasing on ebay this is the first time i have had a package come postage due... maybe i am way overdue but, i did expect the seller to be a little more receptive

any ideas on how paypal/ebay handles this type of situation i'm not really worried about $4 at this point, it is more the principle because i think the sellers response was pretty flip

that is BS! I thought the PO normally returned any item without sufficient postage to the sender before leaving the local PO? why would they ever expect someone receiving a package to pay for it??

Not sure what you can do... but isn't it amazing how horrible their writing is? I mean, sure, we all make mistakes in writing. But they are responding to a customer question. The mistakes and the tone are ridiculous!

sorry.

I had this happen once except I was the seller. I had the weight off by 1 oz on the package and they had to pay $2. The buyer didn't ask for a refund but I gave it anyway because it was my fault. I now add an xtra 3 oz to the weight of the package before printing the label.

I don't think there is anything you can do except for leave neg feedback. Judging from her response, the seller doesn't seem to understand what happened and I don't think she is willing to try.

The seller is not a native speaker, that is why. And they didn't even understand what happened as "probably" it has never happened to them before.

Maureen, if their next reply won't be satisfactory for you, I think you should just leave a neutral or negative feedback and forget about 4bucks you paid, which I'd be pissed of about too.

I would actually try to file an ebay/paypal claim. Paypal at least used to have an option when selecting the reason for the dispute as "shipping cost". Save and take photos of the package with the postage due stamp

Honestly I would probably have refused the package to begin with, because i guess you have to assume the worst in people these days!

^ Adding to that maybe call eBay 1st and tell them the situation and they will let you know how to proceed.

i'll let you know what happens, thank you everyone for the advice i hadn't heard this one before

I've only had postage due on one item that I bought on ebay, that I can recall anyway, and it's actually kind of a funny story. It was SOOOO long ago that it was before I even started using paypal. I had sent a money order for the item and it received with about $1 due. I wasn't too worried about it and just paid it. But then the buyer filed a non-paying bidder notice on me! He sent a really threatening message about needing to pay right away and that it was people like me that made ebay no fun. The whole nine yards. lol. So I took a picture of the package he sent me , with the postage due notice, and e-mailed it to him. And asked if I truly had not paid, why in the world would he have sent my item? And I also politely asked him to send me a dollar (again, didn't pay with paypal so he could not have refunded through there). I didn't think he would but I received a $1 bill in the mail the next week with a handwritted, 'Sorry' note. lol

I have had times where items that I have sent out have been returned to me and postage has been due (including a Secret Santa gift that my person never bothered to pick up so it was returned from Canada ). That's always annoying.

Just send a photo of the postage due stamp. They obviously shipped the item incorrectly.

That's good! I personally wouldn't give them a neg because it seriously did sound like they were misunderstanding what you were trying to say (even though it was clear) and it is hard to identify the tone of someone's email message sometimes. But that's just me.

i rarely if ever give negs. only if something is fake and i know the seller is aware of it, or of the seller REALLY pisses me off this seller just wont get any feedback from me even though they actually did get nicer and came through in the end, but the first message was uncalled for imo, misunderstanding or not, they were rude.

I agree. I would do the same thing at this point (not leave feedback). Since they did admit their mistake (finally), refunded, and apologized.

That doesn't even make sense. So they should pay her to leave good feedback? Umm. k.

I once had a buyer state to me 'please make sure this item gets to me within the time frame or you can partial refund to ensure good feedback' GRRRR I was sooo pissed I didn't even want to send the item.
