E-bay seller asking for more money

Hi,
I just won a pair of jeans off e-bay 2 days ago. Days before auction end I sent a message to the seller asking if he'd be willing to ship to Canada...preferably first class if he was willing. He responded saying he would but that he wasn't sure of the exact cost but would charge me $17. The auction ended, I won and paid immediately. I now receive a message from him telling me he shipped them and paid around $28 for shipping and is now asking me to pay him the difference. Can he do this??? I would never have bid on them if I knew shipping would cost me almost $30!!! I've purchased off e-bay for many years and have never had this happen to me before...any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Did you get a tracking number? If the seller really posted them to you than nothing they can do to get these money back. 27 USD sounds like a Registered post, which is how much it really costs.

No, I haven't received a tracking number...I should maybe ask him to see if he really has mailed them. I'm not entirely sure but $28 sounds like USPS Express Mail...both Priority and First Class would have been cheaper. I understand some sellers will only use Express, that's fine with me, but then he should have specified that before auction end.

^ Yes, he should, don't know, by that's how much I was charged every single time when buying jeans from the USA (I'm in Sweden). Yeah, why don't you request the tracking first?

Thanks for your replies!! I actually just requested the tracking number...I don't know why, but I feel funny about this...his messages are very abrupt and unclear. We'll see what he says I guess! Thanks again!

If they were jeans and First Class there is no way the cost was $28.

But to answer your original question. No, you are not responsible for paying the difference for their mistake.

So he told me he shipped them priority...the cost was so high because he shipped them in a box instead of an envelope (guess he had them packaged in a box already). It's just frustrating because I don't want to be unfair, but I really think this was his mistake. He could have easily gotten a rate off usps.com, I was fine with him shipping with priority, but I had no idea he was shipping them in a box, $17 would've covered priority flat rate envelope as well. Anyways, thanks again everyone!

It may have been around $28 if shipped Priority in a box, depending on the total weight. But that's irrelevant. He quoted you a price and must stick to that.

Really a Seller should not be using First Class OR Priority Flat rate as there is no option for delivery confirmation on either and they will just end up getting screwed buy buyers that take advantage of that a claim that their package didn't arrive.

Get used to paying around $28 for a pair of jeans. It's what it costs us in order to ship a method that protects us against dishonest buyers.

Yes, priority in a box is around $28. And I completely understand that sellers should be shipping Express in order to protect themselves from dishonest buyers. If a seller is willing to ship first class or priority, I'm okay with it, I've never had a package disappear (cross fingers), nor would I ever say it didn't arrive if it did, but I know that unfortunately there are people in this world that would do these things.

It's unprofessional for the seller to ask you for the difference in shipping after agreeing upon a shipping cost before auction end. I cringe at what this seller is trying to do. I can't imagine ever asking a customer for more money because I guessed wrong on the shipping amount.

The seller needs to swallow the difference for promising something he was unwilling or unable to give.

It's there own fault. They should determine shipping rates prior to giving a quote. You should not pay anything more than their quote.
