*Update* Ebay - first time returning an item

Please forgive me if something like this has been asked but I'm inexperienced on ebay when it comes to returns. I want to make sure I cover all my tracks.

I bought a NWT dress that had a very noticeable hole right in the front. The seller has been nice enough and agreed to take a return, but she told me that both the original shipping and the return shipping would not be refunded. I understand the return shipping, but I paid for the original shipping, so why wouldn't I get that refunded too? Would I have to open a claim to get it all back? How should I respond to her? I'd really like to avoid opening a claim, since she has been cooperative.

Also how can I ensure that the return address is confirmed? I can't seem to find it in our paypal transaction history.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

To get your original shipping back, the seller must agree to refund this or else you can only recover it if you win a paypal claim that awards you full refund.

In your case with the hole in the dress, this meets the requirements for a SNAID so you should definitely win a dispute and be rewarded full refund.

Quote from Paypal: "To create a return shipping label:

1.Log in to your PayPal account and click the My Account tab.
2.Click History at the top of the page.
3.Find the payment for the item you want to return.
4.Click the Details link in the Details column.
5.Scroll to the bottom of the Transaction Details page and click the Return Shipping Label link.
6.Complete the form and click Continue.
7.Make sure the information is correct and click Pay and Continue. Your PayPal account is charged for the label.
8.Click Print in the return label pop-up window."

In terms of confirming the return address. The following I believe to be true but not 100% certain:
The return address used will be the one that is associated with the seller's paypal account. So I do not think it has to be confirmed but as long as you return to the address specified. You should be fine as long as you return with delivery confirmation or better yet, tracking.

Thank you. Maybe I will just eat the original shipping cost as it was only $5. I couldn't see the create return shipping label option but was able to create one using the multiorder shipping tool.

Seller should cover both in this case. It is the right thing to do, it is not your fault the item is inaccurately described. If you file a dispute eBay will side with you and you can at the very least recover the original shipping cost. I would mention that the item is not accurately described and you feel your shipping cost/return shipping should be refunded/covered by them.

If they refuse completely I would say this is an appropriate case for negative feedback.

^I agree.

Do not eat the original shipping cost. Explain to the seller that all shipping should be covered by her, and if she doesn't comply, file a dispute/claim so you can at least get the original shipping back.

Agree 110%! The seller isn't doing you a favor by taking it back, you did her a favor by not filing a claim and trying to solve amicably. They made the mistake, they need to step up! I cover shipping both ways if I have made a mistake... not because I have to but because it's the right thing to do! Why should a buyer be penalized for my error? I would ask her and If she refuses you need to open a dispute. You will win and more than likely they will cover return shipping as well.

Ah ok, thanks guys. Should I wait until the seller has the item in her possession then request the full amount?

No! Clear it up with her before you send the dress back. Contact her ASAP and tell her since it was her mistake that she NEEDS to cover the original shipping! If she refuses start an ebay dispute.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I returned the dress and got my refund, and now, more than a week later, I get a cancel transaction request from ebay/this seller. I actually left him/her positive feedback because they were polite and apologetic, so they're just doing this to get their fees back, right? I should deny the request?

Yes, complete the cancellation request. It's just so they can get their FVF's back from ebay. It's nothing bad against your account at all.
