Buyer refusing to pay customs fees - help!!

Hey everyone,

I'm really sorry if this topic has been covered before, I did a search and didn't see any of this exact situation - but any sellers who can give me some advice I would really appreciate it!!

So I sold this item to a UK buyer:
Seven 7 for all Mankind Roxanne Mercer Skinny Jeans 26 | eBay

Shipped it using USPS Express in a flat rate envelope to her, now she is saying that they are making her pay $25 (or maybe 25 pounds I don't know) to receive the item and if she doesn't pay, they'll return the item to me. I am guessing this is a customs fee, since I definitely did pay the postage...

If it gets returned to me I assume I am forced to refund her money, which means I'm out the $29 I paid for shipping.

Is there anything I can do about this? I obviously can't force her to pay the extra $25 but I feel like this is her responsibility and can't really see a situation that doesn't end in me getting screwed out of the original postage. Which wouldn't be like a HUGE disaster or anything but I'd be kind of pissed.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Do your shipping terms state the buyer is responsible for any customs or duty fees?

^She doesn't need to state that. Any international buyer should already know that they're responsible for any fees when they buy from another country.

tcl, if the package is returned to you, refund the purchase price, not the shipping you paid.

Unfortunately she does. eBay policy if you want any sort of protection at all against international buyers.

If you are lucky you can convince them to pick it up, if you are not you can try to refund minus shipping. If the buyer files with ebay you will lose that.

Actually you should inform her in advance while she ordered. Otherwise, she has the right to refuse the parcel. In addition, the rules always tend to protect the buyer. You have to pay for the costum or refund her in this case.

The buyer should know that they are responsible for customs fees. Unfortunately, a lot of people really don't have a clue. Out of interest, did you put the selling price of $45 on the package as its value? 25 is way too much in fees for that value, unless you shipped by Fedex () of course!

I used USPS express mail and I'm pretty sure I put $45 on the package. I think she is going to accept the jeans. I feel bad about this situation and also can't figure out why they're trying to charge her so much, you're right that 25 pounds seems excessive... yeah I don't know. Oh well lesson learned. Thanks everyone. I will be sure to put this in the listing in the future.

I think we paid 25 when we got an expensive Blythe doll shipped to us from Hong Kong.. It has been a long time since, but I think they said something about a minimum tax charge regardless.. She wasn't lucky her package was checked. Can she show you the copy of the letter she received? But if she does have it, what would you do? So there's no point really..
