| | | my neighbor is a UPS guy and i asked him how this would affect him. He said that if the strike does indeed happen, other mailing services like UPS would take over. He also said that things sent registered mail would still go through the postal system fine... we were worried about D's immigration paperwork which is supposed to be coming soon and he said it wouldn't be affected because that's registered mail. so, not sure if that shines a bit of light on it for some of you or not? :\ it still blows big time. all of our bills this month came with special notices saying that even if canada post strikes we're still responsible for paying our bills on time. luckily i pay them all online but for the people who don't that's gonna suck. stupid union.

| | ^The problem with couriers taking over is that people with small business can't ship to the US without having their customers having to pay huge brokerage fees  . I know I'm not willing to risk it  I've heard that quite a few business are switching though so Canada post is going to be loosing a lot of customers. In the news it said that Lee Vally is switching to UPS and won't be going back to Canada post for a year, if ever. It seems so silly that they are risking loosing so many corporate customers with demand for the postal service already in decline. Quote:

And, of course I understand if they go on strike. I feel bad I didn't know about this. How could I have missed it   .

Curious... so I have a package in customs, will it still be released into the CP system, once it's through and just sit in the postal office? Or will it just sit in customs and not actually get to an office to be sent to me until after the strike..

| | | I saw a guy in the canada post mailman uniform earlier today... at around 2pm, and asked what is happening with the strike. He said he didn't know yet and wouldn't know til late tonight, but he hoped it wouldn't happen.
My mailman hasn't been an actually canada post employee for many years now. They contract out a lot of the work.
The government is planning on contracting out a lot more services over the next few years, so their lucky their jobs haven't been completely cut yet.
These costly stikes usually don't accomplish anything and the amount of money that will be lost because of it will only hurt the employees harder in the future.
