First class international from US to Canada...how long does it take?

I screwed up. Buyer asked me to ship jeans via first class mail international to save her some money. I know, I know, stupid of me. I shipped them on September 2nd. Buyer filed an item not received today through paypal. I'm just wondering if maybe it might still take a little longer. I'm so mad at myself and now it looks like I'm out $100. Lesson learned.

It can take many weeks to get to Canada that way (not always, but possible). Sorry Lisa, the only thing you can do right now is hope that you have an honest buyer and they get to her anyways.

ETA: I searched some old threads and Pam had one that took 3 weeks, other members said it got to them in 1 week. So I think it really depends on location.

Thanks so much, Emily. I hope you're right. The buyer escalated the claim right away without even contacting me.

I'm from BC, Canada and first class usually takes anywhere from 1 week to 3 weeks.

How rude You were doing them a favor too by sending so cheap. Honestly though, I thought jeans would be too heavy for first class, but I rarely ship in that method so I guess I am kind of clueless about it.

They were jeggings so they're lighter but the weight limit for first class international packages is 4lbs.

Thank you for that. I thought it could take up to 3 weeks but wasn't sure. It says the package left NY on september 3rd but then that's it. Buyer lives in Ontario.

Well I hate to tell you, but that's all it's ever going to say ever. There's no tracking. You're at the buyers mercy to be honest about whether they have received it, and I feel this will not go well based on the events so far.

Also.. with First Class International when you fill out the Customs Form that number can only be used to verify when the item was mailed/accepted at your post office. With Priority International mail that number can be used by the USPS to see if the item has reached the country of desitination/is stuck in customs/etc, it still doesn't show when the item was delivered though..or atleast thats what I was told when I called the 1-800 number on usps.com.

Usually my shipments to Canada take 1-3 weeks and I'm in NJ. I recently mailed out a Urban Decay Naked palette to a girl in the UK on August 2nd and she still hasn't received it though, so maybe the mail has just been alittle slow.

Stinks the buyer never contacted you first though! How rude!!

I've had an item take up to 4 weeks to arrive in the past, that was the longest anythings taken.
It's people like that that ruin it for everyone else in Canada and then no one want to ship even very cheap items through First Class mail. I'm sure she either got it or will get it very soon.

Totally agree with all this. As a Canadian Buyer she should know it takes a looong time to get here -- has she ever heard of customs?

Lisa, I would send the buyer a message letter her know nicely that you shipped the item first class mail to help save her money. With that being said she needs to also check the timelines alloted for first class mail and ask her nicely to give it more time, and to also check with customs office.
Unfortunately like Pam stated you are at the buyers mercy do not EVERR send international anything else than express with tracking and insurance, I put it in my ebay listings also that is the only way I will ship, its the only way you can be covered.

Thanks, Kimoy. I did just that and emailed her very nicely and the buyer promptly unregistered herself from ebay. Got the verdict today from paypal and it was as expected. An expensive lesson for me for sure. Thanks everyone for your help!

The buyer cannot closer their own eBay account. They are an unregistered user for another reason.

Express is the only way to ship intentionally. I do not care about saving a buyer I do not know a couple of dollars when it comes to protecting myself in the transaction. Your own protection (of your item and money) should come first.

I won't make that mistake again for sure. That is interesting about the unregistered user thing.

I think you are right. She had 17 positive feedbacks left for her in the past month left right after she purchased and paid (looks like she was buying a lot of stuff) and she only left ONE feedback for one seller and now she is unregistered.

You could pull her bid history and ask other sellers.

"unregistered" = SUSPENDED by ebay.

There is nothing that knowing why she was booted or what she did in other transactions is going to do for you. It's not getting your money back. Don't waste your time and move on with the lesson learned
