Fackity fack, the UTI is back!

Apparently the antibiotic treatment wasn't long enough to zap the infection.

Here we go again...another antibiotic.

Oh that sucks. I always have to take 7 days worth of meds because they always come right back otherwise.

Thanks all.

I just got back from the doctor, and my urine (quick-dip) was normal but they are still going to send it for a culture and treat it now since I have all the freakin' symptoms. I'm on a 7-day course now; let's get this fackin' thing out of my poor bladder.

That sucks! So sorry! I had that issue about 10 years ago when I had a UTI that wouldn't go away, it came back like 4 times. However, I wasn't pregnant. Hope it goes away this time.

I had a UTI once that I took antibiotics for...after I was all done with the antibiotics I was still hurting so I went in and they said my test was fine...and that my bladder was probably just swollen...weird. I hope things go well! It sucks to have a UTI when you are pregnant!

They told me it could have been baby's position...I would agree with that, but I've had many babies on my bladder, but no pinching/pain in my bladder.

I took Keflex (cephelaxin) the first round, now they gave me Macrobid. I hate taking antibiotics.

They sent a culture in, but they told me to take and finish the entire course anyway.

With my first, I had a UTI too while pregnant. Took the antibiotics until it was gone. But I remember when I went back later for one of my monthly visits, I asked them to check me again cause it felt like it was back. They tested and it wasn't. It had felt like one though.

I'm trying to decide if I should just wait for the culture to come back or start taking the medicine now. The side effects seem pretty bad.

What would you do?

When would you find out the results of the culture? How bad are the side effects for this particular drug?

I would hate for this infection to spread to your kidneys and make things even worse.

I will know by Thursday or Friday. I just took the first dose; I figure if the culture is negative then perhaps I can stop? IMO, there is no reason to take an antibiotic if there turns out to be no infection, KWIM?

I know the golden rule about never stopping antibiotics, but A) if there's no infection, then what? and B) I think pregnancy is the exception to the rule; IMO there is no reason to expose the baby to the meds if there is no infection...

Thoughts?

Did they do a culture the first time around?

^ Yep, both the initial dip and the culture showed infection the first time.

Was it sensitive to the antibiotic that they gave you initially?

They never told me otherwise. The only thing they could come up with is that the keflex got rid of most of it, but perhaps not all of it.

I'm so confuzzled. I don't have the same urgency I had last night, but I'm worried those symptoms will come back. I'm just so scared to take chances either way in pregnancy.

I dunno, it could be a totally new infection. They are opportunistic.

Yeah, that's why I started the antibiotics; I do NOT want a kidney infection.

Hopefully I won't have any nasty side effects.

Just a thought...Maybe the baby (extra wt. on the bladder) is preventing you from emptying your bladder completely and that's why you got the UTI Well I hope that you feel better soon!

Yep, that's most likely the cause.

Between that and the fact that my bladder is weaker from all the pregnancies makes it hard to empty completely during pregnancy.

Have I said in the last five minutes that I'm done?

not too suprising that the cephalexin didn't cut it, it is fairly common for your body to become resistant to keflex as that is the most often prescribed antibiotic for infection. the side effects with macrobid are usually not bothersome for most people... but being preggers, i just don't know. hope you feel better though!
