Question for the moms

More specifically, anyone that has gone into labor on their own. Only having one experience at this so far, I was wondering if having an IV is standard? I had one for the pitocin, I'm not sure if they gave me fluids that way too or what. PITA about it was, they made me keep the catheter or whatever it's called in for a day or so, until they knew my BP was going to stay down, in case they would have to give me meds to take it down. I HATE needles, hate IVs, all that stuff, and was thinking it would be nice to not have to deal with that this time around LOL Wishful thinking, or really possible?

I don't think having an IV is standard; there are other ways of getting fluids, and if you don't need pitocin, etc., there's no reason to have one, I'd think.

I just clicked on this thread bc I wanted to see if you've had your baby yet!

I remember my mom saying pitocin didn't do jack for her and the OB had to actually go up there and break her water before she went into labor (she had preeclampsia so they had to induce her). If you don't like the idea of pitocin maybe ask them to do that? I'm guessing it'll work

PICS when the baby arrives!!!!

With my first child my water broke and i wasn't having any heavy contractions yet. As soon as i arrived at the hospital they put an IV on me. I think it's standard.

They try and give IV's to everybody in case, but my labors are too fast...I wind up getting them afterwards to replenish fluids. You can refuse it if you'd like. They generally like for everyone to have a line in just in case an emergency comes along; they can quickly administer meds through the IV.

In 99% of the cases, it's unnecessary, but in these litigious times...

LOL...don't worry, I promise I'll post when she's born! I'm *planning* on having DH's laptop at the hospital, so I'm hoping I can update fairly quickly.

If it's a normal thing, I won't put up a fuss about it, it's not THAT bad...just hope they don't make me keep the cath this time!

Oooh yeah. I hate ivs. I think it's pretty much standard though.

I don't hate needles but it takes them like 10 times to find a vein. I always end up with tons of bruising inside my arm & my hand.

BTW: Good luck! You're so close. I bet you're so excited!!

i had an IV for both and i went into labor on my own...both times
i didn't receive ANY drugs for pain, either time so i'm pretty sure it's standard procedure to have an IV
oh.. and i got to have a catheter through the entire thing w/ricky..it wasn't taken out until the next morning (and i had him at 12:35 PM the day before)

I STILL WANT MY FRICKIN' EPIDURALLLLLL !!!!!

Yeah, I think it's standard procedure. You could just ask if it's possible to skip it, and see what they say.

Good luck, you're getting so close!

Yeah I've had IVs with all of my children, I think it is a pretty common practice. I dislike IVs and they always manage to give it to me in my hand because I have "runaway veins" in my arm but I know having an IV is for the best.

Oh Nola, that would suck! Thankfully, all they did with THAT catheter was to put one in quickly after I gave birth, drained my bladder, and removed it. I had dreaded the thought of having one in, too!

I had an iv with both mine... I make them put it on the outside, lower part of my arm so it was at least out of the way and didn't hurt when I needed to use my hand

mine was put in BEFORE birth, during LABOR.. because my body went into SHOCK - and i couldn't 'go' when i was supposed/had to.

I never had a catheter, thank GOD!! I never had pain meds either (for obvious quick labor reasons)...so no iv's either.

I remember with my 5th the nurse was telling me she needed to check my glucose and start and IV; I looked at her (I wasn't even undressed yet), and said, "I'll beat you to it, trust me". My daughter was born about 2 minutes later. No iv again, and glucose reading...no go.

Nola,

I've had a catheter before and it sucked. With my first I was on bedrest in the hospital for two days because they were giving my IV meds to stop my contractions at 31 weeks. I hated it, I couldn't do anything for myself, shower or nothing, I was going insane not being able to walk and just laying in the bed eating ice for two days

I was induced, so I had an IV the whole time. I think that it's standard though. I have had friends who had an IV, so they had a line in case of emergencies. I ended up with a csection, so it stayed in the whole time. I had a catheter to for the whole time and after.

I'm pretty sure that it is standard (if you have time) to have an IV. They like to keep you hydrated, as well as have you ready for an epidural (if you want one).

On another note....I was in the hospital 2 times in January and had a total of 8 IV's. The first time, it was only one IV. The 2nd time they had to change the location 7 times. Yeah, that's right, 7. I had horrible bruises on both arms (and hands).

In my medical center, an IV is standard. Here they do it in case there is an emergency situation (i.e. unexpected blood loss), for hydration purposes, for pain meds, and if needed for general anesthesia.

Maybe its different here in Canada, but I never had an IV for both my boys. With my daughter I had one only after 21 hours when they did an epidural.

With my first I went into labor on my own (on my due date too). I didn't have to have an IV. I didn't take medications of any kind. And I had a WATER BIRTH which was really cool and I recommend it to anyone that has it available. The no IV thing may have been because I had a midwife. (I still delivered at a Hospital though)

It was a very neat experience. My SO was in the hot tub with me and was actually able to deliver the baby. (now that I think about it the midwife really didn't do much at all ) I wanted to do it again for the 2nd one but they stopped allowing it at my Hospital.

Have you consulted a midwife or doula?

I had IV/Pitocin/epidural with both of mine, and I still wonder whether that was really necessary. But if you are in the hospital, they will follow standard operating procedures almost all the time b/c they want to minimize risks.

Several of my friends have had natural births and they have all had a midwife, or at least a doule + OB.

But, as long as you have a healthy baby, that's what's counts!
