what do you pay for babysitting?

I have an 11 month old baby and will be hiring a sitter (it will be a high school senior or a college student) to keep my son for 3-4 hours on a Sat. night. He will be asleep during this time.

We haven't actually hired a sitter yet so I am new to this and just want to make sure I pay a fair rate.

my friend's a babysitter. She gets paid $10 an hour. Minimum wage here is like $8.25 or $8.50 I think. She also cooks the kids dinner and sometimes takes them out to parks/etc if the parents want. The family who she works for love her though, so maybe they pay her that much because of that.

eta: usually babysitters have their own fees and will tell you before you hire

I usually pay between $7-$10 an hour for my 3-year old to be watched, depending on the circumstances. It's only been for an hour or two at most during hours he is awake (and trust me, the sitter earns her money- my son can talk and ask questions for hours non-stop ). For a sleeping baby I would think it would be a little less.

I think I have answered this before in another thread but I pay my babysitter (a high school senior/Freshman in college) 8.00 an hour & she comes to my house (20 min drive one way) so I normally pay her gas as well (20$) if we don't have anything 'simple' in the house to cook we'll leave her money to order pizza if she wants. We have two kids, a almost 5 year old and a 10 month old. I think that it's a little too much honestly since the ONLY times we really need her are at night, when they are sleeping and maybe a couple 'awake' hours. We normally just round it off and give her 100$ anyway. She is my husbands causin so we try to help her since she has a lot of expenses her parents won't pay for her.

I also think it's anoying when highschool girls that have hardly any experience demand like 10$ an hour and say they can't cook, don't drive, and won't come to your house. I interviewed people like that and laughed in their face.

I would just ask what they charge on the phone before you even interview them (that's if you interview) that way you won't waste your time.

I pay them what they're worth.

The bottom end is $7/hr and that's telling them I pay a flat $40 to cover between 6-11pm. They can drive themselves.

If they go above and beyond their duties, I pay $80. That way they make themselves available anytime I need them.

And what's with me going to pick them up? I might as well drop my kid off at their house!

I always start my sitters at $8 an hour and usually the kids are sleeping most of the time they are there. I tell them after time goes on and things are going well I will give them a raise. That way they feel like they have something to work for. My last sitter ended at $12 an hour. I have 3 kids. They are 8, 6 and 4 so they're pretty self sufficient as far as a sitter goes.

I've read some Craiglist postings in my town that offer $125-$150 a week for around 50 hours! That's only $2.50-$3.00 an hour. I can't imagine even being open to it. Am I crazy for thinking so?

For a weekly rate, $125-150 is pretty standard for a nanny. People who are CPR Certified, former teachers, etc. can command more than that but just an average babysitter runs about what you said. Depends on the geographic location and the demand also. Places where there are a lot of stay at home moms have lower rates because a lot of moms want to take on an additional kid or two so they can stay home.

^ I agree! Where I live average in home care & daycare a week for my two kids ages 5 & 10 months would be about 150-200 a week thats A LOT of money at the end of the month for someone who doesn't have to leave their home (not saying it's not a lot of work) but over 800 would be the pay! I know people who work regular jobs and only make like 1500 a month, so for stay at home moms who want to babysit a couple more kids can make pretty good money IMO.

Wow. I used to make $8-10/hour babysitting, but that was 10+ years ago. And $150 a week for a nanny?? That seems nuts!

i pay 10/hour for my three kids (8, 6 and 3).. we usually round up, too, especially if the sitters do a good job (clean up, etc). this is usually for a sat night out and they are usually asleep for most of it, like many others have mentioned when it was just my first child, i think i was paying 7 or 8 an hour but once it was 2+ kids have paid 10 an hour. it makes our nights expensive but it's so impt to get out! our sitters drive here, too.

the only exception is that sometimes i use a younger girl for my youngest when we take the older two to do something and i pay her a little less bc she is younger and doesnt drive, etc. as she gets older i will pay her more, though.

i know you wrote this/responded to this a while ago, betsy.. i am with you....i didnt get paid that much.. this is just what i pay.. it kills me.. every time we (dh and i) go out, we tack on soooo much money to what we pay our sitters. it about kills us.. especially when i think what i used to make babysitting.. but it is absolutely necessary for us to go out.. for all parties involved
i dont come home drunk but i do come home w no cash and often pay my sitters w a check. they dont seem to mind bc they are making some major cash a few times they have asked me for cash and i of course make a point to pay in cash those times. i never have cash on me. i dont know what is wrong w me.. but the times they request (which are not often at all) i make sure i do!
