help with boys room please

We just bought a house & are still trying to get settled in after 3 months. All of the little 'remodel projects' are done and now it's time for painting & decor. I have NO IDEA what color to paint, or what furniture to buy (it's time for some new stuff) My son is only 4.5 so of course he's not into suggesting anything, he LOVES cars/sports so I have an idea on decor but what color for paint? I like green but there are sooo many different shades (suggestions on a kind/brand/color that I won't have to keep re-coating?). I also like loft beds.... does anyone have a loft bed and what do you think of it? I would LOVE to see pictures to help with ideas. I am scared to go out and buy without knowing for sure because I will go through $$ like crazy because I am sooo picky! Thanks!

eta: I also have been searching for cute bedding & curtains but can't find anything that I REALLY like. He is NOT into action figures at all so it's hard. He has a queen sized bed so any suggestions there would also be great!

Currently he has a queen size bed and you are thinking of switching him to a loft? What size bed can you put on a loft? I think only twin, correct? If so, would that be a strange transition from large to smaller? Actually, can you post a pic of an example of a loft bed? I had them in college with a desk underneath! I think it's the same for kids.

I would first choose the bedding and then pull a color that you like from it and use that for the wall color. I usually purchase kids bedding from Pottery Barn and the Land of Nod.

Also, I really like Benjamin Moore's Aura paint. Comes in various finishes. Flat is easy to touch up, but not so easy to wipe clean.

Have fun decorating!

Here's an example of a loft bed (I think). It was the little girl's room who's parents we bought the house from.

Yeah, that's a loft bed. You can find them in queen size, I had one when I was younger. I like browsing apartmenttherapy maybe their kid's site will offer inspiration?

I love some of the ideas posted on the kids section of hgtv Kids Rooms Decorating Ideas & Pictures - Baby Nursery Themes, Kid Bedroom Decorating Ideas & Playroom Designs : HGTV - Home & Garden Television Maybe you can check it out to get some ideas. I think sometimes they even post the comments of where the items come from or maybe that is for the other rooms. I suck at decorating, which is probably why all of my walls still look plain just like the day we moved in three years ago When I move again, I will have to get into the decorating mindset because my kids won't be sharing a room anymore since they are now a little older.

I did a space theme in M's room.. when I moved, I just bought all new space stuff (harder to find when most of it had sold out ) but TJ Maxx/HomeGoods/Ross were my go-to's for a lot of it. I find its harder to find kid-fun sheets in queen size.. hes in a TwinXL now, which is almost as bad. Between those stores and JoAnns I was able to construct a pretty cool room. I didnt do any painting though.

Thanks everyone! I still am just so undecided on everything I think I'll just get some really light green paint and do the walls that color then a darker green for the closet & trimming. I want something glow in the dark on the ceiling....(not stars) lol

My daughter's room is a happy green, and I also painted a hideout thingy a nice green.

I'll have to look up the colors.

I may have a photo somewhere of the hideout which has chalkboard circles on it.

Okay, found the ones of the "hideout". It's actually a little "room" we had made under the basement stairs and there is a doggy door that the kids scoot through to their playroom. I also had a Dutch door made for it so they can pretend they are selling us stuff, or whatever. Has a little peep hole too.

The paint color is Benjamin Moore Dill Pickle (I LOVE IT)

As you can see, the color takes on a different hue with different lighting. It would different in natural light too, but note this is in our basement with very little natural light in that particular area where the hideout is located.

Her bedroom color is different, much brighter, but a very happy color. I don't think I have pics of that ATM.

Thanks! They have fun and people get a kick out of it because they don't expect it.

Benjamin Moore paints can be found at various paint stores.

dill pickle 2147-40 Paint - Benjamin Moore dill pickle Paint Color Details

Use their store locator to find a place near you. Pick up paint chips (they have some large ones now) and see how it looks in his room -- Benjamin Moore Paint Stores - Where to Buy Paint - Benjamin Moore Stores

beds (loft, bunk beds) I just can't decide what to get him, and then I'll start hunting for bedding. He has a queen bed now but I want to move that to the guest room and get him something different.

My kids have bunk beds. We have several.

We have Pacific Rim Woodworking (Classic 4 in 1) Pacific Rim Woodworking - Welcome

Also some Pottery Barn ones -- Thomas & Camp. Both of those are twin over full beds.

We've had the Pacific Rim one for about 10 years and it's still looking great. Gorgeous, solid wood made in Eugene, Oregon.

The Pottery Barn ones are actually really solid also. Not the craftsmanship of the Pacific Rim but sturdy and a bit more fashionable.

For bedding, I've bought Designers Guild (from Australia), Pottery Barn Kids, Pottery Barn Teen, and the Land of Nod. I think PB Kids might have some nice choices for your son. Mine has some multi sports stuff but with the National & American League baseball team sheet sets.

I have to say, I like their quilts, but I'm not a fan of their sheets. They wrinkle easily and aren't the softest. Well, their chamois one are TDF but not really for boys. Darling for girls.

So, if you like their designs, get a quilt or comforter but perhaps gets some nice quality t-shirt/jersey sheets from a bedding store in a coordinating color.

Oh, and PB Teen has loft furniture.

I've not bought them so I can't attest to how sturdy it is without a bed underneath to help to reinforce the frame.

I did have a few lofts in college. They were a great space saver.

Regarding the paints -- definitely go to the store and pick up paint chips/swatches. Your lighting will determine how well the color works in the space. It can look so different, even from one wall to another in the same room.

Keep us updated and have fun!!!

Thanks Linda, I have looked at some pottery barn stuff & I think I'll purchase from there. He currently has ralph lauren sheets that I am pretty hapy with, it's just I have never had a theme for him it's always been stripes & solids (because his bedroom was a guest bedroom in our old place)

I am going to have fun with his room, it's just I didn't realize how stressed I could get over a bedroom. I'll take pictures, but I am pretty sure I'll probably have his room changed at least 5 times before I am happy with it.

Thanks again for your suggestions!

I love PBK stuff. If I could afford it, I'd get both of my boys the Star Wars quilt and sheeting. As it stands, I've been searching for some sort of motocross or x-games type of bedding for my oldest. I'm not that impressed that the only one I've found is at Walmart.

We are in the process of doing 2 kids room makeovers (well, 1 teen and 1 tween) We just purchased this loft bed and my 12 year old loves it. He shares a room with his younger brother who uses the top bunk of a bunk bed set we purchased several years ago. We sold the underneath bunk bed and use the space for a reading nook. It's got shelves on both sides and drawers built in. Lofts are such a space saver b/c you can buy them with the built in desk underneath
Dinsmore Twin Loft Bed w/ Desk

For youth bedding I'm partial to Company Kids Their quality is excellent and holds up. Plus I like that you can mix and match solids with a patterned comforter or coverlette. I bought the cutest airplane bedding from them about 10 years ago and I am just now selling it It's held up through thick and thin.

Kids

I'm stressing over paint colors too There's just too much to choose from and I'm not sure what's going to look good with the lighting

Linda, that little room is awesome! Love the color scheme too.

Debbie, if you ever see anything from Pottery Barn Kids that you like, let me know first because we have a PB Outlet here with a lot of the PBK line of bedding at discounted prices (not always significant but you never know)
