Car seats

Anyone still have an older child in a car seat (not booster seat)? My son will be 6 next month, and I still have him in the 5-point harness of the Graco Nautilus. The other day, he started asking why he still has to use a car seat. The neighbor girl (who I keep before/after school) uses a booster seat...then again, she's a good 4-6" taller than he is. I told him that the harness is safer, and told him that race car drivers use the same type of harness when they race. Don't think he's buying it. He doesn't give me any crap about using it, generally. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this, and what did you say/do? Honestly, I'd like to keep him in it as long as possible.

i tell my daughters it's the law and that pretty much satisfies them. my girls are pretty petite so what other kids sit in is irrelevant (and i tell them that too).

my son is still in a 5-point... he's 6. i've been meaning to get him a booster, but he's still within the weight/height requirements of the 5-point. because it's safer, i'm keeping him there until he outgrows it. i just tell him he has no choice; he has to sit in it.

Also let him know that race car drivers use the 5 point harness.

My daughter is 4 and still in her Britax Marathon which I believe has a 65lb limit. She's only 35lbs so I will be keeping her in it as long as possible. I already have friends who have switched their 4 year olds to boosters. I also had her rear-facing for an extended time. It's safer, you're the parent, 'nuff said.

Both of my kids are still in car seats or boosters. My youngest will be 7 next month and is still in the Graco Nautilus. My almost 10yo is still in his high back booster, although technically, he can ride without. I know he probably feels a bit 'different' but really, if we're in an accident, I want him to survive and don't care what he looks like. Both my kids are slight/small and I don't even think my youngest is 50lbs!!

And honestly, my 9yo can still fit into the Nautilus and when my husband gets the engine back into our 4x4 Bronco, both will be in a Nautilus or a similar race type booster b/c there is only a lapbelt in the backseat. We tell the kids all the time that Nascar drivers are basically in a 5pt harness. LOL

Thanks for the replies...if it comes down to it, I'll just use the "I'm the Mom and I say so" card
My BIL & SIL had their daughter in a booster until she had her strokes, then the hospital would not let them take her home until they had a seat with a 5-pt harness! So they went and bought the Nautilus for her. She's a month older than my son, and had the strokes when she was 4 1/2.

My daughter's 5 (smallish-average size) and still in the britax marathon, as is a co-worker's son who is in 1st grade and will soon be 7. This is definitely one of those "because I'm the mom and I love you and this will keep you safe and I don't have to explain it anymore" conversations that we have every so often.

I'm so glad that there were so many replies in this thread. I've had some other parents look at me like I'm crazy, and I just look at them like they are crazy back.

^I totally agree. I thought that maybe I was a bit weird for keeping them in their seats this long but I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this thinking.

Abram is in a high back booster but he is 50 lbs. I should invest in a Nautilus because I know Evan will use it too. Evan is still rear facing and I believe he can stay that way until is 30 lbs. He weighs 23 lbs right now. The only challenge will be when I run out of strap length....my seat is really weird. The rear facing harness has to stay in the 2nd to the bottom position. Front facing I can move them. I don't know....I need to buy the Nautilus.

Danielle, there are now convertible seats that go up to 40 pounds rear-facing and 65 pounds forward. Here's one that's not too expensive: Walmart.com: Evenflo - Triumph 65 Convertible Car Seat, Santee: Car Seats
That's as high in weight (forward-facing) as the Nautilus. Only difference is that the Triumph 65 doesn't convert to a booster.

We just got a booster for D b/c he was a bit too tall for the harness in his current seat, and bubs had outgrown his, so he got D's old seat. He's in a full back booster seat now, and loves it. I was worried that he would loosen the seat belt or squirm around in it, but he's been really good. I kept him in his 5pt for as long as he fit it though! It has the loop for the shoulder belt to go through, so that it's not at his neck.

It's this one "Big Kidô Deluxe Booster Car Seat, Eclipse"

The only reason I moved Luca to a Britax Parkway (high back booster) is because I have a two-door sportsy car, and there is very little room in the back.

His old carseat, the Marathon had a much higher base, so his legs kept hitting the front seats. If I would not have had this problem, I would have kept him in the Marathon a few more years.

Edit to add : Danielle, I strongly recommend the Britax Marathon - I believe it is one of the safest, sturdiest carseats on the market, and the weight limit is 65lbs, I believe.

^this. My twins are 5.5 and still in britax marathons. I just tell them that's the way it is. They are on the small side- only 32 and 34 lbs. So they can be in there till probably junior high. They were also rear-facing till 2.5 as was my youngest.

I have the nautilus for mine and my ex's car.. Mine was one of the first ones that came out, I think.. so the harness won't work for my son anymore.. but my ex's was bought a year later and he can still fit safely in the 5pt.. (the shoulder straps in mine in the highest position are below his shoulders.. in my ex's they are still above.. go figure) so I have ours setup sort of as a booster and use the seatbelt.. my son is 4, 42" tall and 45lbs.

I REALLY like the nautilus'.. so much so I shamed my ex MIL into getting 2 for her car (because she was using old garage sale carseats that were way out of date. ugh)

Ugh is right...this is one area where I will NOT compromise, nor will I worry about hurting someone's feelings My dad had this seat...I don't even know how old it was, someone gave it to him. He was planning on using it when he takes my son somewhere. I took one look at it and said, "NO WAY!" I told him that it's really no bother at all to me to remove the seat from my van and move it over to his vehicle. I told him that, regardless of what the person who gave it to him said, there's no real way to know if it had been in an accident, and that I felt much better using our own seat.

Mason must have a long torso...our Nautilus is also one of the first, I bought one as soon as they became available, and Owen still fits in just fine. I just measured him, and he's 44"...I think he's around 45 pounds or so (which reminds me that it's soon going to be time to stop using LATCH and start using the seat belt to secure the seat).

Also, my mom even bought a Nautilus for her car/my stepdad's truck whenever they take Owen. Glad to have two between us, now that they can take Anna for a weekend, they'll each be able to ride in one. We have Anna in a Britax Regent, which would take up WAY to much room in my mom's Cobaltand my stepdad's extended cab truck! The Nautilus is a tight squeeze in the truck already.

I am amazed how many people I talk to, people who have children, mind you, and they do not know that car seats have an "expiration" date.

^scary but true. My uncle gave us some expired car seat when we had K. I just threw it out. I know people mean well when they give you hand me downs, but I'm not going to use used car seats

Reminds me of the fit I threw when we went to Mexico last summer...I was set on bringing one of our Marathons, and my Dad said oh you don't have to we reserved a car seat for the rental car. Welllll when we got there they had the biggest POS car seats The first one was too small, so I demanded another. The second one was bigger but crappy. I was so pissed and my Dad & stepmom couldn't understand why. Lesson learned. Always bring my own carseat when traveling!

I kept my kids in the 5 pt as long as I could. My oldest is so small he was in one long after other kids his age were. I really didn't care. I don't care if you think you don't look cool. I'd rather you look like a dork than get hurt if we get in a wreck. I basically just told my kids that's the rule/law/whatever and they didn't give me a problem unless we were around my best friend who was more concerned with her kids being cool and let them out of their carseats/boosters long before they should have been.
