weight gain in pregnancy...

I am soo lost, I have (please be nice) gained 11 lbs in TWO weeks & myy Doctor is concerned because IT'S NOT water weight and I have gained so much weight besides the 11 lbs in the last two weeks. He literally told me that I need to 'slow it down.' What am I supposed to do? I eat healthy & exercise so how the hell do I 'slow it down?' starve myself? I am just lost and worried. I have a fear of becoming fat and have NEVER in my life had to worry about weight let alone have a Doctor be concerned. It's almost depressing.

Have you had your thyroid levels tested? Sometimes pregnancy can bring on hypothyroidism.

well, the last thing you want to do is diet.

what works for most is to divide your meals up into 5-6 small meals throughout the day rather than 3 large ones. make sure each meal is proportionate and balanced protein/carb. it's kind of like the gestational diabetes diet, but without the restrictions. it keeps your blood sugars more stable anyway and decreases the frequency of true hunger.

i was quite active during my pregnancies, and i still gained about the same amount of weight though. i'm convinced your body pretty much does whatever the hell it wants to during pregnancy.

how does he know it's not water weight? you don't have to be cushy for it to be water weight.

edit: hypothyroidism is a possibility also as carolina said. it may not hurt to rule it out.

My thyroid was checked and it's fine, he checked my ankles and said it wasn't water weight...lol I assumed he knew what he was talking about. I actually have been eating A LOT, but it's not been un-healthy and I have actual hunger ALL the time. It's frustrating because I haven't gained a lot of weight for the pregnancy all together it's just been the last couple months all at once. I am just going to try to cut down on how much I eat.

I don't buy the ankle checking to rule put water weight. My first pregnancy I gained lots of water weight and I didn't notice much ankle or feet swelling until late in the 3rd trimester. The NP warned me of having a huge baby and shoulder dystocia, etc. I was also active and eating well. I ended up having a perfectly average weight baby and left with 15 lbs to lose after the water came off. I think there is only so much you can do if you are already on a healthy diet and active. You certainly don't want to restrict calories.

Yeah I thought the other day my fingers looked swollen but I have been so paranoid with how big I am getting my husband thinks it's just all in my head. I am just going to keep up basically what I am doing. I have good blood pressure, very active, eat healthy, and the baby is healthy so obviously things are going smooth. I am just scared because of my Doctors reaction to my weight as if it's not normal and it's probably not, because apperently I am supposed to be gaining ONLY a 1lb a week.

I gained mostly water weight with baby#1. I worked out, ate healthy and gained at weird points. How much have you gained if you don't mind sharing? I gained 45 and had a 6lb baby with about 16-18lbs to lose by the time I go home. With #2 I gained 35lbs but it took longer to get the weight off...

I gained 50lbs with my son...he was 8lb 9oz. My doctor never once mentioned that I was gaining too much weight. I have no idea how I gained that much, I felt nauseauted pretty much the entire pregnancy. I tried eating less but I just continued to gain weight. As Shi said I think your body does whatever the hell it wants when your pregnant For whatever its worth, I weigh about 15 lbs less than before I got pregnant, so I am proof that you can lose that baby weight

I have gained 30 lbs so far, I think my Doctor is concerned because I know this sounds bad but about 22 of that is JUST this last month. With my first I gained about 18 lbs total and had a 8lb 2 oz baby. I think he's thinking that my pattern these past weeks with weight gain has been about the same and with three weeks left at an average of 5 lbs a week would be a lot. that would be 15 more lbs by the time I am due. It's scary to me, I mean I already have a TON of stretch marks so I am to the point where it's not like I'll ever see a bikini again, but I do want to see my stomache flat again.

I had a very similar situation happen to me. I gained 69 pounds total and it wasn't water. If you want I can share a photo of my double chin. I would watch my portion sizes, as that was my main problem looking back. I weigh less than I did when I got pregnant now though. You will lose it don't worry.

^ I agree. IT will come off, it just takes time. I am a few pounds lighter than before both babies cause they keep you moving. How much longer do you have?
Edit-You only have 3 more weeks Don't stress, just be excited that your little one will be here soon.

totally agree. no doctor can just "tell" if it's water weight.
i was only slightly swollen and gained 50+ with 5 out of 6...it all came off within a few weeks BECAUSE it was water weight. i ate lots of small meals too, so don't worry about that either. my doctor gave me the same speech about weight gain (of course i'm quite underweight to begin with, so i think my body plays catch-up)...anyway, that's hoodoo that he can tell.

i just saw your pic in TR...puh-leeze! you are not even that big for 37 weeks; you look terrific. the more you worry about your weight gain the more you'll stress out, and you don't need that right now. the weight will come off.

I saw your TR pictures and I thought you looked great and definately not big at all. I actually thought you looked small for 37 weeks. I agree that your body does what it wants. My first pregnancy, I ate like a pig and gained 50 pounds. I lost it all after. My second pregnancy, I didn't want to deal with losing the weight, so I was very careful about what I ate to the point of almost dieting...not really, but if I wanted dessert, I had a green apple or low fat frozen yogurt, and I never ate fast food like I did in my first pregnancy. With all the healthy eating and "dieting" the second pregnancy, I actually gained 65 pounds. In the last month when I was going in for weekly weigh-ins, I was gaining 6-7 pounds a week. My doctor didn't care at all even though I was depressed as hell about it. Anyway, everything was fine, and all the weight, and even a bit more came off by about 4 months after the baby was born....So, don't worry. Just stay positive and be healthy and it's almost over

i think you look great, too, debbie and i agree that the body just does whatever it wants when pregnant. i gained 35-40 with all three of mine.. some weeks i had a big gain and some not at all. i tried not to focus on it but it's so hard. at a certain point, i weighed backwards on the scale bc i didnt want to look at the actual number but just know the gain. lol but you will be holding a beautiful baby soon and it will all come off in time. it's so hard not to focus on it but try to focus on the baby you will soon be holding.. and YOU LOOK AWESOME!! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!

Debbie - I had the same thing happen to me and I was freaking out - I thought I was doing so well, I had only gained about 15 lbs total up until I hit 32 weeks and then BAM! from 33 weeks to 37 weeks I gained another 15. IN ONE MONTH! And in my case it is definitely not fluid retention, I am not swollen/puffy at all. I was thinking the same thing, if I continued to gain at that rate I was going to be huge by the end, but after 37 weeks I hit a plateau (thank god!) - my doctor said it's normal to gain more quickly in the third trimester because that's when the baby is growing/gaining the most. I was definitely hungry allllllllllllll the time in the 8th month and even eating healthy/working out, I did gain that 15lbs. Don't worry about it, you are so close and the weight will come off! and 30 lbs total (even 45 if you continue at the same rate) isn't bad! we can motivate each other to work it off!!

edit: I just saw your pics in the TR section, you look FABULOUS!!! I wouldn't worry about the numbers, you're still a smokin' hot mamma!

Thanks ladies, it is hard to hear someone else worry about my weight especially a Doctor , I know he didn't mean it rude but I am sensitive when it comes to weight. I am glad that I am not the only one that went through weird weight gain.

Debbie, I gained a ton with both boys, and it all came off, so try not to worry about it (easier said than done). I know how you feel though, my first pregnancy when I was still working, a customer who didn't know I was preggo, and couldn't see it through my HUGE work shirt (), asked if I was gaining weight b/c he could see it in my face! I cried for SO long after he left

And you'll have an easier time getting it off this time b/c you already have an active little boy to be chasing after
