20 weeks pg, should I get the flu shot???

I'm 20 weeks pg and I've never in my life had a flu shot. Two years ago when I was pg with my first it seemed everyone was urging me to get the flu shot because I'm pg. Well my Dr. told me that it was really up to me and if I chose not to get one, he didn't think it was a big deal. I didn't get the flu shot and didn't get the flu. Well now that I have a toddler in daycare who gets sick often, I'm wondering if I should... (And my 16yo step son is also now living with us, he's picked up some pretty serious illnesses from school too.) I do tend to pick up every little thing when I'm pg, I had like 7 colds during my first pregnancy. But since DS is getting the flu shot (but DSS probably won't), do you think I need to get one too?

i go the flu shot with my 5th daughter because they practically forced me to. they insisted that all of us get it. they made it sound like we were committing child abuse if we didn't. i felt fine after getting it, just a bit tender on the arm. i was due with her in february, so dead winter in the midwest.

i didn't get it with any others, including my 6th. they asked me if i wanted it, but i was due in the summer and figured flu season was 1/2 over when i found out i was pregnant in the first place.

honestly, it's your call. the flu can be nasty for a pregnant woman (i had a flu-like thingy with #4 and it was torture)...and if you tend to catch things it may not be a bad idea. the added benefit to you and your baby-to-be may sway your decision as well.

keep in mind, though, that a cold is WAY easier to catch than the flu, so comparing the two is not really accurate. i rarely get sick beyond colds, so to me it wasn't worth it.

My opinion only... yes, get the flu shot especially while you are pregnant. It not only protects you but your unborn child as well. And since you have a toddler in daycare and others living you, it would definitely help protect you.

I had the flu once and I was down for 10 days. Literally down...... body aches, fever and chills... I could not function.... it is nothing like having a cold, believe me.

I think if you get the flu shot while you are pregnant you will also help pass those antibodies to your unborn child that he/she will later need.

Everyone here knows that I delivered Sloane at 24 weeks and now that she is home, our whole household has received the seasonal flu and the H1N1 too. Both hubby and I are getting the pertussis vaccine next week also. We do it more for our children sake than our own.

But I do believe it is a personal choice................

see here is a case where the shots are almost a necessity since there is a baby with a compromised immune system due to prematurity (i'm sure the recent surgery didn't help matters either)

i'm all for personal choice as well.

Oh man. I debated with this forever with S, and here is what I did. I got the h1n1 shot because (this is all MY opinion) I felt if I didn't get it and got h1n1 and something happened to S I would blame myself but if I got the shot and something happened to him from it (highly unlikely) at least I could say I tried to protect him. kwim? The other reason I got it was because I was still in school and around sick ppl all the time. Also I like that he is not vaccinated against that flu.

Yes, it for sure changed when we brought Sloane home. We have the anti-bacterial hand cleaners in every single room in the house (although not a substitute for hand washing while at home)... so our thoughts and opinions have changed about vaccines now that she is home

Geez...such a dilemma! I think I'm leaning more toward getting the shot. I don't know why, but it didn't dawn on me until I created this post that DSS is a factor in this as well, because he could bring the flu home too. I was only thinking of DS because he gets sick so often from daycare! I guess it's really not going to hurt anything to get one, I don't know why I'm so hesitant.

there's no harm in getting the shot.
there *might* be harm in not getting the shot.

i'd go on the safer side since you're pregnant...IMO

I personally do not believe in the flu shot.

I wouldn't get it period. Never have.

JMHO.

this was exactly how I felt. UNTIL my doctor's appointment 2 weeks ago when they told me "we're giving all pregnant women the flu shot" - I figured if they were recommending it to all pregnant women, well they're the experts and it's covered by insurance, and there's really nothing to lose so I just did it. I doubt I'll get one again, but for the sake of the baby I felt it was worth it.

edit: my decision was made A LOT easier by the fact that I was already at the office and they had the shot ready to go. If I had had to schedule another appointment, I don't know if I would have made the same choice.

That is somewhat a factor for me too. It's going to be a PITA to make an appt and take off work early just to get a stupid shot. Not to mention that I've been taking off early SO MUCH lately due to prenatal appts and taking DS to the Dr (he recently had croup).

I hadn't given a single thought to getting the shot until they ambushed me at my appointment, they made it so easy I had no reason not to say yes. I agree, with the # of appointments we already have to go to, it's definitely a hassle to schedule ANOTHER! Maybe see if they can do it at your next regularly scheduled one?
Hope your son is feeling better, my sister's 17 month old is just getting over the croup now too, it was so sad seeing him so miserable

i felt the same as Joan and had they not had the shot ready and waiting as well, I wouldn't have gone elsewhere either. my husband took the kids and they all got theirs separately.

I also didn't really consider getting the flu shot. I have never gotten a flu shot before. But I was really sick last week with something that may have been the flu. I was tested for it but it was negative. My OB still thinks I had the flu though. I did get a flu shot at my OB appt yesterday. Until I asked about it yesterday, my OB has never once mentioned it to me. But he highly recommended it. I asked him why he didn't say anything to me about it and he said that they didn't have any flu shots available in the office earlier . I think that if he felt that strongly about it then he should have mentioned it to me earlier.

Anyway, I was also anti-flu shot but I got one yesterday b/c they gave it to me at my regular OB appt .

That's a good idea, my next appt is Tuesday. I guess I didn't figure my OB would have them. I thought I'd have to go to my regular Dr.

And thank you, yes DS is feeling better. It was a good 1 1/2 week recovery though. It was so sad to see him hardly able to breathe. He gets sick often, but usually just with colds, so luckily I don't see him down and out too much.

I'm going to get one. We have flu shot clinics at work. I just keep forgetting to put it on my schedule. It would be good to get it at your ob so you can make sure you get the thimerosol free one. I know the pharmacies around here give them too for about $25.

I got one when I was pregnant and it was past 20 weeks when I did. It won't hurt and it will also help to protect LO once born. I also got one this year just to be on the safe side and so did Elijah. Because of my husbands occupation he is required to get them. So, in short, we are all vaccinated. I have never had the flu either and was skeptical about getting it. At the end of the day, it's your body and you have to do what you think is best for yourself and your baby...whatever that may be.

All I ever got from the flu shot was a tender spot on my arm and a little swelling at the injection site. No big deal.

I never got it when I was pregnant, but decided to get one last year, since I think I caught strep from someone not wiping down a machine at the gym As bad as that sucked, I didn't want to deal with possibly catching the flu. I've always had my kids get it, though. Anyway, I didn't have any issues with it, but I won't be doing it again b/c my damn insurance didn't cover it

Same here. Never got it, never had the kid get it either.

(but I always try to avoid medication if at all possible)
