During labor - things you wish you had

So, maybe I should have thought about this before and actually researched it. But, my best friend is about to have a baby!!! 4cm dialated. I'm jumping in the car now for a 2 hr drive, and was curious if there was something huge that you wish you had... I've never been around a birth before, except for maybe that 6th grade sex ed video. and don't want to fail her :/

Not too late! What a good friend you are. With my last one, I made my husband go to the store in the middle of labor to get me a stress ball...it gave me something to hang onto and focus my energy too.

Other things...magazines? That helped me for a bit-to get my mind off of things....but there comes a point when you have to just close your eyes and get through it. Those two things would help her through 2 stages Just my opinion though-different things work for different people

Good luck!

Thanks! Will there be mags in the waiting room I can steal or should I stop off for those too?

During my first, which lasted just 4 hours, I remember wanting a cold wash cloth on my forehead (I was having a water birth and it was quite warm).

My 2nd only last 2 hours and the only thing I wanted was my phone to be updating my myspace (lol @ myspace now but hey, that was 4 years ago). lol

All I could think of before was bringing a book and I was like...who would really want to get into a full on plot during labor? Lol. Magazines never crossed my mind.

P.S. Take a photo of the clock in the room right as the baby is being born (if you are in the room). It's one of my favorite pics from my first.

lol @ myspace Amber!

Yeah, one of my fav pics from Addie too was the board in the room with the nurses name on it, the doctor, #s, and "Welcome Addison" Cute, and I like having the names of the people who helped her come in it.

You could prob get the magazines in the hospital gift shop

Oo, good idea. I did remember a camera thank god. Were you adverse to having your pic taken? I know it's usually not a time when women look super hot...for me, having the memories would outweigh my sweaty face though.

Barf. I had HORRIBLE skin with this last one especially.

I got pics before I got into my gown, and then only right after she came...I look horrible, but I'm so glad I have them. I'd just ask her first. You wouldn't want to anger a laboring woman!

With my other 2 there is maybe just one of me and my husband. We weren't way wild about lots of pictures and video during...but we're kinda private about that anyway. There are SOMETIMES that I wished having a bit more, but it doesn't affect my memory. Like I said, everyone is different.

OMG, I'm thinking of things I couldn't have lived without during labor: nonsticky lipgloss/chapstick and sugar free lifesaver mints () I went without food during labor for 12+ hours...and you aren't supposed to drink anything either...and I got SO thirsty and dried out. My doctor asked me while I was laboring if I'd like a cocktail afterwards and I said a cocktail of ice and water!!! And lots of it! Sorry, I'm rambling, hope it helps!

I have lots of pics from both labors and even though I think I look like shit, I love them. Just ask your friend if she wants pics first, like Anne suggested. (Take lots right after baby is born!!)

As far as video, I didn't do video during my first but wanted a video with my 2nd. I watched it once a couple weeks after I had my little man and was mortified. lol. I could have lived without ever seeing that.

that's a tough one for me since my labors were so fast...i never got to use any of the traditional "comfort" items. there are no labor pics of me because there was never time.

i think pictures are priceless though; if you are taking pics, then her labor coach can concentrate on helping her rather than trying to juggle a camera and coaching her. i would take the pictures, then make an album of those pics so she can enjoy the memory.

one great pic in addition to what Amber said is to get baby on the scale with the weight showing.

A stick to bite down on!! Just Kidding...

I wish I would have had snacks to eat. I didn't get to eat ANYTHING but ice chips for about 30 hrs! I delivered at 2:30 a.m. and if I hadn't been so extremely exhausted and actually cared about eating there wouldn't have been anything around.

So I vote snacks!

she wasn't allowed to eat anything that want liquid. she just wanted water and someone to chat with, so i got that down. but, all is done and i got all the photo ops suggested (though I was 5 mins late on the clock pic because the baby came out with the umbilical cord around his neck and i was more focused on him BREATING). all went well though and he is healthy and adorable. and i got to hold my first little baby. they are nowhere near as breakable as i thought, lol.

she didn't want her pic taken so i only took a couple of her, and focused more on the docs, her hubby and the baby himself!

thanks again guys
