The official AF Wean Team

I am borrowing the name from another thread. I just started the process this past week with my 2 year old DD. It's actually been going better than I expected. We are down to twice a day during the week in the morning and before bed. She is also going to sleep on her own without being on the boob which is huge. Knock on wood! She's done this everyday this week.

We'll see how the weekend goes though. I've been able to distract her when she asks, but I'm not sure how that will work when we are together all day. We have a couple of parties to go to this weekend so we should be occupied enough. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I know others have talked about weaning soon. How are things going?

great thread idea!

i'm down to three nursings a day. morning, afternoon nap (although i can sometimes get her to skip this one) and night. sometimes i'll still have a fourth nursing in the middle of the night...she's my worst sleeper of all six.

anyway, i'm not in a huge rush to wean; i let baby decide...which may be a decision i regret with Emaan.

I weaned my oldest at 10 months, in an attempt to not have my nipples chewed off , and he REFUSED to drink formula, so I snuck it into his apple sauce, or other runny foods to thicken them up instead of adding rice cereal. It worked for the couple of months til he was on whole milk. How old is Devon?

my little stinker refuses to drink anything but breast milk. i had to stop nursing her a long time ago, but i continued to pump. i'm so sick of pumping and quite honestly, i would love to smash the pump into a million pieces.
i have so much milk stored... like 2000 something ounces. she won't drink it though. anyway, i have tried mixing breast milk into formula, adding pear juice to it, but she still won't drink it. she'll be a year old next month, so i keep telling myself that i'm almost there but i want to quit now except i can't because she won't drink stored breast milk, and she won't drink formula. *sigh*her pediatrician gave me the ok to try whole milk now, but i'm hesitant to do so because of her dairy sensitivity. she seems to be growing out of it, but i'm still not sure.

sometimes i can get her to drink water and juice if i drink it (she likes to drink from my cup ), but usually all she wants is breast milk.

^How about goat's milk? I have heard that this works for kids that have cow's milk sensitivity. Maybe she would drink that yogurt smoothie stuff; I know's it's dairy though.

ETA: You would be a breastmilk bank's dream come true.

I am pretty sure DD is nursing just for fun now. She is doing this annoying thing of asking to switch sides every ten seconds. The latching on and off gets to be uncomfortable and after switching 10 times I am really over it.

Mia was pretty easy to wean... I stopped offering and she didn't really ask. She got upset a few times but she was 15 months so it was a little easier. I think it would be really hard to wean her now that she is 22months!

Yeah... I stopped offering 12 months ago. LOL Surprisingly it hasn't been as bad as I anticipated though. The next one we are going to drop is the bed time feeding. DH is going to start putting her to bed. We'll see how that goes. I am feeling encouraged as she has been going to sleep on her own lately. We'll see...

cat, will she eat cereal if you put your breastmilk in it? she probably won't taste that excess lipase if it's mixed in...and you can use some of that stored milk.

i used my own breastmilk on my kids' cereals too; they always took from the breast but would rather starve than drink it from a bottle so i used my stored milk on their cereal.

I didn't realize the issue was lipase. Have you tried scalding the breastmilk before storing? That is supposed to solve the lipase issue.

i don't know for sure that it's excess lipase. it doesn't have any weird metallic/vomit odor/taste (yeah, that's right. i tasted it. i was trying to figure out why she wouldn't drink it).
she's very picky, but i'll try mixing it in with her cereal.

Glad the "Wean Team" name got put to good use!

I'm down to night feeding and morning Although I cheated and fed her yesterday afternoon because I wanted to be cozy and close to her. I keep asking my husband...you sure you want me to wean? It will cost more if I wean her! Then the next minute when I'm crying and depressed, I'd wean her that second if I could. I'm such a mess.

Cat, so sorry! That is so frustrating. I don't think I will be any help to you.

My son stopped nursing at 10 months , so I pumped for a few months after that. He could not handle dairy either, so I started giving him goat's milk. It's crazy expensive, but at least he's not in pain after drinking it like he was with cow's milk.

Good luck to you, I don't look back at those days fondly

Vincent nurses 2x at night also. It was time for us too because he thinks biting is funny. The only difference for me is....

..............I'm so sad. I'm going to miss nursing.

^ I know I'll miss nursing too. I've been nursing for nearly 13 years now, and I know emaan will give it up soon too...it's bittersweet. she turned 2 yesterday... I know in my head it's about time for her to stop, but my heart...that's a whole different story. to be honest, I tear up thinking about it.

Shi & Samantha!

Shi, that has GOT to be hard! What a loving and sacrificing mama you have been all of these years (and will continue to be in the years to come). Your girls are incredibly lucky to have such an informed and unselfish mother. You are such a wonderful example to them as well as the mothers and mothers to be here on AF.

Now, if they start getting sassy, just direct them to this comment at any time during their teens
