Contraceptives and abortion

So this is not to start a debate about prolife vs prochoice or anything like that. I am doing research for myself and I found some information that I found interesting. While the site I am citing is a prolife site their points are highly valid about breakthrough ovulation and certain hormones preventing implantation of a fertilized egg. I talked to my doctor about it and she confirmed the info. I not judging anyone or trying to step on any toes about their personal choices. I was just glad that I am made an informed decision so I figured others would be as well.

Facts About Abortion: Which Birth Control Methods Cause Abortion?

The forms mentioned will only cause an abortion if you believe that life begins as soon as sperm meets eggs. If you do not believe this than it's not an abortion. (For example, I have an IUD and I do not believe that every time my boyfriend and I have sex we are potentially creating a life and aborting it. That's just my opinion though.)

That being said, as you mentioned, it is a pro-life site and can hardly be considered a "source to make an informed choice" with.

OK no more arguing from me.

yeah, it really is a gray area based on when each person believes life begins.

I have to agree with what was already said....but I need to add that I don't consider the pill to be any kind of "abortion" type contraceptive in anyway shape or form.

I can tell you I decide to go with a diaphragm though because

1) it doesn't involve hormones (I have a hard enough taking tylonal - I'm an anti-pill kind of person)

2) DH is uncomfortable with condoms

3) I didn't feel comfortable with IUD because I do kind of view as abortion although as Rae states she doesn't view it like that and I have to agree that I think most of the population may side with her on this...it is just something I am not comfortable with.

This obviously left me with Cervical Cap and Diaphragm which are so similar. We were also left with the pull out method which we tried occasionaly and we have this to thank for DS#3

Pulling out totally works I have 2 kids because of that method.

I do believe that life begins when the sperm and egg meet, however I do not feel that the IUD is a form of abortion....lots of variables there.

Shi is right....huge gray area.....

Yeah, I don't really like discussing this topic because everyone has their own opinion and I do not like to try and tell other people what I think is best for their fertility or for them to think. I will say that I do have an iud and do not consider it an abortive contraceptive. I really do not feel that any means of preventing pregnancy can be considered an abortion. imo.

I have one because of this reliable BC method!

My doctor told me that an IUD just "creates a hostile environment for sperm", but once I looked it up at home I read things similar to what you posted. I'm uneasy about discussing things like this, but I do believe life begins when the egg and sperm meet. Just don't want to make anyone uncomfortable or feel like I'm forcing beliefs!!

Ok, I'm done.

I wasn't really trying to get a discussion going at all. Just passing on information. I am not really sure how I stand on the contraception thing and where life begins. I was going to get the mini pill but now I have decided against it and the IUD. It is just all so confusing. I am having a hard time and just read a lot of stuff I had never heard before. I really felt like the on campus clinic misled me on a lot. I am glad everyone is taking this civil and not getting heated.

I agree with Shi too, it is such a gray area. I do believe life begins at conception but I also have an IUD and I don't look at it like abortion. If it creates a hostile environment and the sperm and egg can't conjoin, conception can't happen. (That's what I tell myself and I'm sticking to it!) Anyways, hope you get it figured out. Figuring out what birth control is best for you can be difficult.

Sterilization will also prevent you from having an abortion.

It's a touchy issue, with a LOT of gray areas.

But I see no problem with providing the information necessary to allow an individual person to make a decision on birth control that satisfies their personal values.

At the risk of getting too personal, I have a question for the ladies who have children thanks to the pull out method. Did the father pull out at the last minute, or with a few minutes to go? (I read a few peer-reviewed journal articles saying there is no sperm in pre-ejaculate.)

Jasmin, have you decided on a new method? You could always say screw bc and make Samson a little brother or sister!

pull-out method, as i told Jasmin about a year ago, is a recipe for getting pregnant...eventually. it takes A LOT of control on the MAN's part (which is lulzy in and of itself) to pull out at the right time. it's NOT when he's about to ejaculate, as many people falsely think. there is sperm present throughout intercourse.

sure, we'll hear about the 50 people this method has worked for...for 10 years, etc. but here's the thing. some women are extremely fertile, and one little droplet is all it takes. others require many more droplets.

edit: WUT? no sperm in pre-ejaculate? tell my second-born about that one, please.

That is what I always thought too, but I read a few articles where it says that there is no sperm in pre-ejaculate for most men, so this is what threw me.

^Don't have time to read the whole first article, but the letter to the editor in your second link is only based on a study of 12 men, which is hardly conclusive.

My best friend's sister found out 2 weeks ago she is pregnant. She thought that you cannot get pregnant while breast feeding....well she is 24 weeks pregnant....due in August. Her daughter turns 1 in July She took a test, went to the doctor, and found out the sex all in the same day. He had been kicking her so that is why she took the test.

Not once have I ever thought of the IUD as being any sort of abortion. It's totally different. (IMO of course)

Danielle, OMG! That would be CRAZY! I wouldn't let my husband touch me until I had the IUD in place

What about the pull out method w/ birth control? I know people who have used this method and it didn't quite work out for them.
