Too young to pierce ears?

I'm thinking of having Zoe's ears pierced. She'll be 6 months this week and after she gets all her shots this month I was going to get her ears pierced. My MIL thinks she's too young and I should wait till she's 1 yr. Any input?

Here is my uninformed reply because I am not a mommy and hopefully won't be for a long time. Personally, I just love how pure and "untouched" babies are. I wouldn't want to get my baby's ears pierced because I just think it makes them look too grown up or mature or something.

Also I just think it's nice to wait for the child to make the decision on their own. Several of my friends don't have their ears pierced and don't want them pierced. Mine are pierced because when I was 7, I decided I wanted to wear earrings! I'd let the baby grow up and choose for themselves, but that's just me!

My response is all sentimental and has nothing to do with health concerns or anything like that, of course. Ha.

I think that it's a very personal decision. Having said that, *I* will not be getting my daughter's ears done until she's old enough to ask to have them done. That's how it was done for me, so that's what I'll do for her.
If I were to choose between 6 months and a year, I'd probably get them done at 6 months, since I would think that she'd be less likely to pull at them than a 1 year old would.

I had mine done when I was a baby, as did my sisters , and my eldest daughter had hers pierced when she was a little over a year. We're thinking of doing it know for the reason April brought up

I have yet to meet a girl who doesn't want her ears pireced, bit to each her own.

I had all six of my dsughters' ears pierced quite young. My oldest was two (hubby was too scared), but the rest were 2-3 months old, just after their shots. I'd do it all over again; they never pulled on them or bothered them, they healed beautifully, and they hardly even winced.

My lobes weren't pierced til I was 20, my first piercings were two in my cartilage when I was 17 My sister is 13 and JUST got her lobes pierced. You never know if your girl will grow up to be a lil tomboy, you know?

If it was me, I'd just let my kid make their own decision. I found it such a weird "custom" (not bashing anyone here) that people had their babies ears pierced so young

We already know that we're piercing her ears, (I know not everyone will agree with this decision, and that's fine) but I guess I just wanted to know if there is really any difference if we do it at 6months as opposed to 1 year.

Thanks everyone for their input! Shi you've put my mind at ease

^ i recommend 6 months; by a year they are really much more aware of everything, and they may give you and the piercer a much harder time.

I didn't and don't. Although, by the time I would have been old enough to ask and for my parents to allow it, i was needle phobic, and would never have been able to shove anything through my body, so take that for what it's worth. I went straight for the bellybutton, at age 22. lol. I still have zero desire for pierced ears.

I know a lot of people who think it's mean to pierce babies ears.
It is a personal preference. I waited until my daughter was 5.
My 3 year old still doesn't have hers pierced.

My mom wouldn't let me have it done until I was old enough to take care of them - so I was about 10. I never got all that into earrings and let them close up a year or two later. I still don't wear earrings at all.

I agree that at 6 months she will probably cooperate with the piercer as well as allow you to clean and take care of them while they heal. At 1, she may decide to put up a fight everytime you try clean the piercings. .

I would get them pierced at 6 months vs 1 year. Like others said, I think she'll be more cooperative at 6 months. Do they pierce ears in your peds office? I hear that's the best place to have them done.

I would rather wait until they asked to be a "cool mom." Haha!

I have no issue with it at all but my fiance thinks it's crazy. I was 4 and my fiance thinks this is absolutely terrible and akin to pageants and making toddlers wear makeup. I think he's nuts!

I think its cute when babies have their ears pierced, but I know if I had a daughter I'd wait til she wanted them. All of my friends got them done on their girls by 6 months and had no problems though I was amazed, I always figured babies would be pulling at them.

My dad wouldn't let me get my ears pierced til I was 18, my mom convinced him to let me at 16

When my boys are old enough to not look like little girls, I may let them get theirs done if they so choose

I had my daughter's ears pierced when she was about 5-6 months, I can't remember since it was so long ago As she got older she didn't mess with them, which was suprising. She hasn't worn earrings in her ear in about a year now since they seem to disappear at school.

Melayna has hers and we did them at 3 months. She literally cried for maybe 20 seconds and hasn't ever had any problems since! The younger they are the better they will heal since they won't pull and tug on them or fight you to clean them!

I have had my fair share of people disagreeing with my decision to do it, including my MIL. What I say is "Well good thing she is MY daughter then!" There is no wrong or right decision when it comes to choices like this, they are our children and we get to make the choices! Just be prepared to be always be "judged" by whatever choice you make but not let that ever bother you!

Yup, agree with everyone else! I think it's cute when babies have their ears pierced I had mine done in grade 3 (so I was 10 or something?) ... and I think my mom asked me if I wanted to. Then, at the beginning of this February I had them pierced again; a second hole just above the fist ones (I'm done now though )

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the input. I think I've decided to do it in a couple of weeks, since I know we eventually would have done it anyway

I totally understand and respect that 100%. I have had several family members say something of that nature to me and my response is that if she chooses to not have them when she's older she doesn't have to wear them, but getting them done early was easier on both her and I in regards to care of them!
