| | | Did your labs come back normal Shi? I know that the older you are anyways, you are put in a higher risk group. |

Then I had the 3-D ultrasound and everything came back fine. My son is now 10 and healthy. It was very scary going through that as a first time mom. There are alot of false positives with the blood test. |

There are alot of false positives with the blood test. | you are referring to the triple screen; this is different. this is a nuchal translucency screening, where there is a level 2 ultrasound combined with bloodwork; the rate of false positives is much lower with the nuchal translucency screening than the simple blood-test triple screen.
for what it's worth, i declined the triple screen each time. it's a pretty inaccurate test. |

You are already at a higher risk due to age. If the measurement of the nuchal fold in normal but the labs are positive. Is it basically telling you what you already know? That you are at high risk? Or because the labs came back positive, that you are at an even higher risk?
I know that a positive test doesn't mean that your child has down's syndrome or trisomy 18.
Am I understanding this correctly? |

| | the labs are separate from the visualization of the nasal bone, measurement of the nuchal fold, etc. sure, age is a factor, but only ONE factor. so it is true that maternal age will make the lab work show a higher risk, but only because the number 36 is higher than 26. the nuchal cord thickness is way more heavily weighed in more than maternal age. |

| | yup but not because of my age.
my pregnancies were considered high risk because i have a health condition. i tried not to worry and always enjoyed the extra ultrasounds. |

Did you have this test done because of age? Please keep me updated and let me know how your labs come back. Our ultrasound was completely normal as well, it was our labs that came back positive/abnormal. |

| | ^ Nope, not because of my age (I'm 32). I just wanted to make sure that everything's okay with the baby. I'll let you know when I get the lab results. |

| | I had this test done and I am still waiting for my results! My doc said that if you don't hear back from genetics right away than everything is typically fine and the results will be discussed at my 20 week exam.
I had both blood tests and the nuchal u/s, the u/s tech said that everything looked great at the u/s so I haven't really worried about it!
Anyways, I had the test done not because of my age, but because it was offered and my insurance covered it. I just like to be prepared so if something was wrong I would be able to prepare better for it.

| | I am going to have this done in a few weeks. I am not in the high risk category but my insurance also pays for it so I want to have it done. Plus, it is another ultrasound and I would like to see the baby again . |

| | So we had our first trimester screen on April 1st with the lab work. My lab work came back abnormal as far as a higher risk for down's syndrome. At my age (40) my risk was 1 in 100. But my labs showed 1 in 77. The trisomy 18 was fine.
Had our amniocentesis done on May 5th and those results came back today. All looks good And 100% girl!!! |
