Going on a cruise with a 2 year old

We are going on a cruise this summer and I am looking for suggestions on things to bring. We will have a couple days before and after the cruise in the Seattle area. I am thinking that I will have to bring her carseat although prefer not to lug it around if it isn't necessary and our umbrella stroller. We plan on taking the ferry to Victoria during our Seattle stay.

Do you think I can get by without the car seat? Will we need to get to port from the airport and if we do those day excursions. Is there a good place to stow it on the ship?

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. TIA.

I went on a cruise when my son was 1. I did not bring my car seat. Nor did I bring it to St Thomas on aonther vacation. I researched and (cant guarantee tho) everyone i asked website and even a cop said that transportation for hire... cabs, shuttles, etc DO NOT require car seats. We took a cab to and from the port in San Diego. Obviously it is up to you about how safe you feel. But are you really gonna hook up your car seat in the back of a cab? I didn't even in san fran for trips aroudn the city. The only way I would bring my own is if I was renting my own car. The car rentals charge a bunch. BUt I don't know if the cruise ship would have anywhere to store it and the rooms are TINY. Unless you splurged for a suite ;)

Just a suggestion... if your daughter doesn't sleep the greatest or you don't want others to hear... bring a sound machine. Cruise rooms are very paper thin.

The sound machine is a good idea. DD is a lousy sleeper. Thanks for the info. I think we might leave the car seat behind. Even if we did strap it into a cab, there is no way we are going to carry that thing around after we get out of the cab.

We never bring our car seat when we travel - we rely on taxiis, buses, trains etc. You have to be comfortable holding your child in your lap in a taxi though. Admittedly, it's not ideal.

Last time I travelled, my sister flew in from a different location and when I said we had taken a taxi to the airport she was like "where's your carseat" and she looked at me like she was going to call social services when I said we didn't have one!

I travelled with my son trough Europe, and although we borrowed a seat when we got there, as I was really anal about being in a car without one, I ditched it as soon as I could, as it was a nightmare to schlep it around.

Bottom line, don't take a carseat. IMO, of course.

I strongly recomend a good umbrella stroller, though. They can nap in it if they have to, and you don't have to lug the baby around all the time. Plus, you can store stuff in the basket underneath. I rented one at some point, and it was horrible to push around on the little plastic wheels. I always took my own with me after that.
