The Potty Training/Toothbrushing/Bribe Thread!!

ugh!! when i am not working i take care of my 3 year old niece. i LOVE her to death and have basically raised her. i honestly feel like she is my own anyway, her mom tells me that she brushes her teeth before bed but i tend to not believe her... whenever she is with me i am always trying to get her to brush her teeth and she refuses... i have tried in the bathtub while i bathe her, everything i can think of and nothing. she will brush her teeth when she sees me brush mine though but all she is really doing is eating the toothpaste!! i have bought every character toothbrush known to man and princess toothpaste and nothing!!! does anyone have any tips???

What I tell parents is to brush their kids teeth for them until they are able to write cursive. Its not till then that they have to proper dexterity to do it correctly. I have mine lay in my lap so that I can see better! But letting her "brush" her teeth on her own is good for her but really is more for her to get comfortable with the idea!

Have you let her pick out the brush/paste? My kids like the ones that light up too...sometimes they will turn the lights out while they brush to watch the lights. Any brushing (no matter how short) is better than no brushing You're such a good aunt for worrying!

ETA: I agree with Kara...but not all kids will let you brush their teeth! My 3 year old will brush for a bit (mostly in front) then I will try to brush the back for as long as he'll let me. I try not to force him...or he won't let me AT ALL.

^ I agree you are a good Aunt for worrying

I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old, I let them "brush" their teeth, then I really brush their teeth

At that age, you should do it for her for it to be done right anyways IMO

thanks for the tips so far girls and the compliments!!!
i think i will take her to the store tomorrow and let her pick out her own toothbrush like you suggested anne i have never seen the light up toothbrushes!! that totally sound like something she would love!!! then maybe she will get excited and want to come home and brush her teeth!! everytime i try to brush her teeth for her she fights me. i am def. going to give the light up toothbrush a try for sure though!!! we are working on potty training right now too... so far she has gone #1 in the potty chair but not #2 i need to see if we have any potty training threads here to get some tips on that too!!

Sounds like she and my son are the same age! He's just over 3 and is PT too...My biggest advice is to not push. She knows how to go, and eventually she WILL decide she doesn't like those dang diapers! Weston is 50% consistent PT both #1 and #2. Both of my kids PT well, then one day decided they didn't want to anymore (so frustrating!) but I promise, the hard part is over. She knows what to do...she just needs to decide for herself that she wants to. This is all MY OPINION. There are lots of tricks, but I just think giving her guidance & support and then following her lead will save your relationship!

And the light up toothbrushes are CHEAP. I think I got the pack of 2 for $1.97 at Wal-Mart. They light up for the length of time that they are supposed to stay brushing.

^awesome, i am so going to walmart tomorrow for sure!!! yeah, with the potty training i always ask her if she needs to go whenever i am going to go. if she says yes then cool but if not, then i won't push it the potty chair i have is a princess potty chair that plays music when she goes and it gets her excited so that is a good thing!! it is so cute after the music plays she tries to go again to hear the music!!

What I'm going to say is a moot point for you But from a very young age, I would brush their teeth. Even if they fought, I would kinda hold them down and do it Then, by the time they get to that age, they *know* that, like it or not, the teeth are getting brushed, and it's easier to just go along with it LOL I think Anne's toothbrush idea is good, I generally don't recommend this, but...is there anything you could bribe her with? I would say that good oral health might be worth a bribe Maybe go to the Dollar Spot at Target, or a Dollar Store and pick out a bunch of cheap toys. My son is 4 (will be 5 in March) and we let him brush first now, and either hubby or myself will follow up after. He actually does a really good job.

I struggle with my 3 yr. old to brush her teeth at night as well. I sometimes let her "brush" herself, but I always brush again afterwards. I force it, because her dental health is very important. Recently I have been letting her spit water out from a Dixie cup into the sink after I brush. It keeps her interest & also gets her to practice spitting out the toothpaste instead of swallowing since eventually she will start using fluoride toothpaste. Now potty training...ugh...we're hoping she decides she wants to soon!

My son has one of those "spin" brushes. We brush first and then he gets to use the "fun" brush after. He loves it.

I brush my toddler's teeth. She's 3. But she refuses to get potty trained. I have tried everything and I don't remember it being this hard with my other two. She's terrified & cries when I sit her on it.
Any tips for that too?

The doctor says just let her decide when she's ready but he doesn't have to clean poopy diapers all day

I have bought singing toothbrushes. It sings for the amount of time, they are suppose to brush for. My oldest will now hit it again and keep brushing.

Weston isn't terrified, but he is totally on his own schedule. We don't push it. Esp. with the baby coming, I don't want to make it a sore spot. He'll figure it out & so will Anavey. I agree I HATE changing the poopy diapers after they are about 2. BARF. But definitely not worth the struggle at the end of the day. Not sure if that helped any, but at least you're not alone!

Jess, how is the toothbrushing going?

Thanks Anne!
Anavey has gone 2 days in a row!!

I ran out of diapers one night & so I just kind of made her go before bed. She kicked & screamed, pinched & pulled my hair but she had to go so bad that she did it. Then, she laughed lol. Now its fun for her plus she got to open her ballerina barbie that had been sitting there waiting for her to go potty.

Nice, Erica! YAY! Good job. Weston wears undies at home and most of the time he's fine. Its when we are out and about or when he has friends over that he gets distracted and "forgets". Oh well, soon enough.

Erica, we did a sticker chart for my son. Every time he went pee in the potty he got a sticker. If he went poop in the potty, he got 3 stickers. Certain squares on the chart were circled and he would get a surprise when he would get enough stickers. If he had an accident or went in his pull up then we didn't make a big deal about it, but he didn't get a sticker. The "prizes" varied, but I made sure there was the occasional extra good one to keep him motivated.

I did this for my first 2 also. I just forgot how to train with 9 years in between!
I'm going to do that. Thanks Dawn

I never did use pull ups with any of my kids. It's so much worse cleaning poopy panties instead of a diaper

I'm just grateful though. My poor scout partner is pregnant with twins already 5 months along. She has 3 other kids ages 2, 4, & 5. She will have 5 car seats. I feel for this woman.

I just bought posterboard & stickers and drew squares on it to hold the stickers. Some of the squares had rays of sun shooting out of them. When you landed on one of those with a sticker then you got a prize.

I cannot imagine 5 carseats.

Max was a hider when he pooped so it was always easy to change him before he was a big mess. It was the only time he stood behind the curtains.

Yup, I do know when Anavey's going too. She leaves the room & hides. She told me this morning she needed to go which is great because I was just guessing when to put her on before.

She says she's going to go poop in the potty & be a big girl today. Here's to hoping! I'm making that sticker board this morning. She loves stickers too so this will work fantastic

OMG, Erica your poor friend! That sounds like a madhouse!

And Weston is a hider too! He leaves the room and gets VERY quiet...occasionally there is a grunt. He's funny...if I go looking for him, he gives me this cute sheepish grin.

We use sticker charts for everything he resists. It is so much easier than fighting him. I stock up on books and cheap toys at the dollar store and then just grab one out of my dollar bag when I need a "prize". I usually use $5 Target gift cards for the big prize. He loves to pick out and shop for himself.

I'm sure it would work for brushing teeth too.

Our most recent use of the sticker chart was staying in bed until morning. There is only so much 4 year old foot in the back a mommy can take!
