Pump Maintenance

Hello Ladies!

My Medela Breast Pump hasn't been used in almost a year and a half; do I need to do anything before starting to use it again? Does in need a "tune-up" or cleaning of any sort. Sorry if this is a dumb question

Not a dumb question at all.

I didn't do anything to mine and it's still going nearly 12 years after I bought it. Of course you will get new tubing; wash that in hot soapy water and you're good to go!

I don't think there really is much to do. You can purchase new tubing if you need to. When I bought my Medela Pump in Style I saw the replacement tubing, breast shields, membrane, etc..... I would maybe consider this if it hasn't been used for that amount of time.

I don't think you can clean anything on the inside of the pump motor, etc....

Good luck!!

Are you guys saying that your hospital gave you tubing, bottles, etc for FREE?!?! We were sent home with nothing for "free" except the diaper on his bottom and the onesie on his back!

oh, I take that back...they did give us some glucose water and droppers to help with feeding since he was a preemie

^ Yes, I got bottles and tubing for free. I've delivered at teaching hospitals, county hospitals, private hospitals, and in my van ...each time I got free tubing and bottles for my Medela pump.

Harass them; that's crap that you didn't get these freebies with Spencer.

I didn't get any free tubing...

Make sure you replace the white membranes on the horns. Depending on how heavily you use your pump determines how often you need to replace them. I was pumping 4-5 times a day so I replaced mine every 6 weeks. It really makes a difference in pumping yield because if those membranes are worn out the suction is decreased.

Good for you for giving your baby the best food available!!!

I also did not get anything for free I had a c section but felt so well that they let me go home a day early. Maybe I should have stayed the extra day?

When I delivered my son, the hospital gave me a whole package with parts for my Medela pump. It had tubing, shields, bottles, the piston to use as a hand pump, etc. I'm not sure if it was "free" because they may have billed my insurance. Just ask them for it though.

I also wanted to add that the kit they gave me was actually for the Medela Harmony or some thing like that so the tubing was a little different but I just cut off the ends so it would work with my pump in style.
