head banging, help?

My 19mo old is REALLY having issues with head banging lately. I'd say he's been doing it for at least 4 months, but he's been really bad lately. Whenever he gets upset/mad he smacks his head on whatever is around. If it wasn't a hard enough object he will look around him and find something harder to smack his head on!! Right now he's got a huge lump and bruise in the middle of his forehead.

I have heard "its a phase" "he'll get over it" "don't worry" etc... but is there the possibility of it becoming a serious issue? Also, does anyone have ideas of how to make him stop sooner? I try to get to him before he hits his head on something hard, but DH thinks I'm the cause (since I go to him when he's freaking out about things)

I vaguely remember my oldest did this for a month or two, but it was never an issue with him, and he never had lumps on his head from doing it

TIA

My son did this too. He had bruises and I was so worried people thought I beat him. It lasted a few months. He was about 2.5 when he started. It will pass, I promise. I would immediately change the subject and try to capture his attention to something else. That helped

^ Yeah, I was thinking the same thing about his bruises, that people would think I smacked him around Thankfully its beanie season here, and he'll actually wear hats now (used to yank them off immediately). Oof, I hope it passes soon. His forehead looks horrible

My son did this around that age.. I took him to my ENT and it turned out he had fluid in his ears.. after he got tubes, it stopped completely.

Not too long ago, I had a bad buildup of fluid in my OWN ears and I wanted to bang my head, so I was able to understand why he did it. (its really a miserable feeling, even if it doesnt hurt)

Kids are weird. What if you start banging your head against the wall and make fun of him for it, maybe he'll stop Or get him a helmet like that dude suggested.

My little brother did that too, when he was about 4. He stopped when we stayed with my grandparents one summer, because they would ignore him when he did it. Hopefully it's not a medical reason, and just a little boy thing...

^ this

My son did it briefly at around 1.5...but just like his other "undesireable behaviors", my husband and I ignoreed it and it stopped after he realized that it wasn't going to get him the attention that he was looking for

Yep, I would try ignoring it too. It can't hurt to try and see if it makes a difference. Kids unconsciously want a reaction (even if it's negative).

Definitely have his ears checked, but I have a feeling this is more behavioral than ear-related...anything is possible though.

^ if it makes you feel any better, my son would do it whether we ignored it or not, thats what made me have his ears checked.

Well *hopefully* its working... He's only smacked his head a couple times in the last few days. He knows what I'm talking about (the huge lump/bruise on his head) and touches it every time DH or I mention it. I had to tell his brother to ignore him too, b/c he'd freak out and tell him to stop hitting his head.

UGH! Never mind. His temper has been horrible these last couple days, and he's been smacking his head harder than before. His old bruise went away and has been more than replaced I've just been walking away when he does it and the smacks are horrible!!

I'm probably really no help but my daughter likes to bang her head whenever she gets upset or want something. She has been doing it for about 2 years now. It's pretty long story behind as to why she bangs her head but her developmental peds suggested that she bangs her head because she likes the stimulation that she gets from it. She only hits the back of her head against something and she would just keep doing it and doing it, even after she has started to cry. We recently just got her a helmet after going back and forth with the docs. We tried everything from ignoring, to reprimanding, to putting her in a different room...to pretending like we didn't see her doing it but it was nothing that we could do to prevent her from continuing to head bang. We didn't want her causing any damage to the brain, therefore we just opted to use the helmet to be on the safe side rather than her doing something that could've been prevented
