For those who Breastfed babies past 1 year

I had planned to wean her at a year, but just have not been able to do it! Anyway, I still have not had a PP AF. I just wondered if I won't get it until I stop breastfeeding, or what?

It depends. Some women won't get a cycle until after weaning and some get it back right away. Nice guarantee, huh.

My experiences:
With my first four, I didn't get my cycle back until after a year; I was STILL B'feeding and got it anyway; I got it at about 13 months PP (then got pregnant again, lol).

With my 5th and 6th I got my cycle back right away, every 28 days, even though I was B'feeding exclusively all day, all night.

I've never weaned a baby without being preggo again though. I b'fed all of them for two years, and will do the same with Emaan.

I hear about a lot of women getting pregnant before they realize that they are back in season. That will probably happen to me.

If you don't want that to happen, be careful. Breastfeeding is NOT a reliable form of birth control. I got pregnant through breastfeeding and protection, so there you have it.

also not a very reliable form of birth control. you have to be very very well trained for family planning methods to work.

I bf exclusively as well. DD is going on 15 months. I got my first PP AF at 13 months and I am pretty sure it was because I stopped pumping at 1 year. I was pumping ever 3-4 hours at work. We introduced cow's milk so I could stop pumping. I am hoping she will wean herself in the next year. We'll see how that goes.

I was wondering about this - I remembered your thread on going off the pill and wondered if you were being careful! Oh well, it is for the best since you are clearly so thrilled to being having this baby.

After I weaned DS1 at 8 or 9 months I think I had 3 or 4 irregular periods over the course of a year before conceiving DS2. I weaned him at abour 8 or 9 months as well and it took a good 6 months to get my 1st period and then they were once every 2 months and on occasion once every 3 or 4 (I went through many tests these cycles ).

Finally after 2 months of not having it and feeling "weird" I did another test and found out I was already 8 weeks along so apparently I was still ovulating at normal times. My body is messed up and I have yet to understand it. With all the pregnancy scares I had due to my messed up cycle, I have been longing to have a normal once-a-month one like I'm "supposed" to have I hope things will return to normal (whatever that is) after this pregnancy as I am hoping this will be the last and it would be nice to have some indication when my body is about to do its womanly thing

hmm well I had normal cycles before becoming pregnant. I really feel like I ovulated today... And there may be some live ones swimming around so I am a bit worried.

ha ha! You could have asked. We thought we were being careful but we knew the risk and accepted it. We are in a good situation. If we weren't I would have stayed on the pill. We were not relaying on the temp thing. I was really just curious about it. The condoms were our main form. I have no idea how ppl use those for years and never get pregnant. The other bonus factor is that my grandmother raised me, since my mom died when I was a kid, and we realized that if we didn't have children soon they would never get to know her. This was really important to us. When I told her she started crying and told me she didn't want to push the baby issue but was scared about dying before getting to know them. It was a wonderful surprise that we are thrilled about. If it was a false positive we would have started trying anyway.

Entirely possible. I had one very light period, ovulated, and got preggo with my second. My first was about Mia's age.

That's what happened to me with my last baby! I wasn't exclusively breast feeding (daughter was about 1 year old) and I was taking a progestin only pill but I got pregnant. That was one heck of a surprise!

There have already been lots of answers, but I figured I'd chime in anyway. I went a little past one year with both of my kids. With my son, I got my first post-partum AF when he was about 10 months(I was on the mini-pill). With my daughter, it was a bit different b/c I got the Mirena put in when she was 4 mo. Now, I don't really get AF, per se, but every so often I get a bit of spotting.

With my oldest I only BF til he was 10mo (he started biting hard so I stopped when he left teeth mark-scabs ), but didnt get my AF til he was 14 mo. This time I BF until my son was 16 months, but my AF returned at 13 months

Wow I can't believe so many AF moms have breastfed beyond a year. As for me I got my period within a month or two after my daughter was born and even got pregnant breastfeeding. From what I've read about breastfeeding as a contraceptive (this is coming from WHO) is that it can be most reliable within the first 6 months postpartum as long as the child has no pacifier and nurses at least every two hours (day and night) and has not started solids.

I just wanted to comment on the regularity issue...I did BF all four of my kids past one year (except Romero, he was a biter too), and was VERY irregular throughout all of my conception attempts. I'd go months at a time without AF...getting preggo was dfficult to say the least.

Now, of course, that we are DONE and I have no reason to be regular and on time...I am as regular as they come. It took my body over half my reproductive life to get the cycle thing down.

Now I wish I didn't get it at all anymore!

How long do most women breastfeed for? Women in my family do it for two years... is that not normal?

^ Just depends on the mom and child's preferance. Doctors just recommend to BF til a year, but I've known people that went longer than that (myself included). I don't think BF-ing until 2 is abnormal if it works for you!

I breastfed until 14 months, he is now almost 18 months. I got my first period at around 13 months when I slowly started weaning him off and he started on whole milk.

Weaning was a piece of cake for both of us, thank goodness!!

i breastfed all of them for 2 years; i plan to do the same for E.

i agree with stacyii; it depends on you, the baby, and all circumstances (health, medications, etc.). there really is no "norm".

You'll be fine!

OT: when do you get your ultrasound to find out what you're having?
