Fertility Awareness

So I was wondering if anyone is using fertility awareness as birth control? I am ready to get off the pill and I don't want an IUD. I am really just looking for some good sites or maybe even forums on this topic. Any other help would be nice also.

It is a good way to get pregnant. No hormone BC, use condoms.

My version of fertility awareness is that I'm aware that I'm fertile after 6 kids.

Seriously, I do know a few people who use this, and it seems to work; you have to be extremely diligent though. Temping, examining different excretions, etc. It's pretty daunting, but worth a try if you don't mind getting pregnant trying to figure it out! I know there are classes for this.

Classes sound good. Thanks! I will look into that. Kids wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Thats why I am willing to try this. I am also planning on using condoms along with this. Thats the general plan anyway.

The word excretions makes me shudder!

Not the best way to go about having kids...in my opinion of course.

My friend tried this since she can't take BC due to a blood disorder of some sort. They tried to use condoms buton the days that were likely non fertile days I think they were a little lax. Within 6 months, she was preggo with twins. Fortunately she was married to a man making a substantial living so while earlier than planned, it worked out for her.

If you are going to make the decision not to use BC and aren't 100% sure you're ready for kids emotionally AND financially, as high school class as it sounds, use a condom every time. Periodic abstinence alone has over a 20% failure rate.

I actually used this method to get pregnant (twins nonetheless). As DQ it stated, it requires dilligence and daily monitoring of 100 different things. Just make sure you "stick with the program" if your goal is to use this as birth control

I know I am not regular w/ my cycles enough to ever even have that as an option (although if I wasn't ready for kids, it wouldn't be my BC choice). I know some women have cycles by the book but the moment your body goes crazy and off of schedule that is when you will end up pregnant. Pregnancy isn't bad, but if its in your power, and usually it is, you should wait till you are ready. You don't want your baby to be "oops" you want it to be "YEAH!"

Good luck finding a plan that works, I know the pill treated me horrible, and I have been on them all, so I understand. But there are other more reliable options. You really should talk to your doc.

Being aware of your cycles is a great idea, but I'd still recommend condoms or another barrier method. You might want to look into a diaphragm or cervical cap, two options that are effective if used correctly, but often forgotten these days.

The main problem with fertility awareness is if you have unprotected sex before ovulation, you have no idea if you might ovulate early, and it's hard to tell how long sperm live for. If you are able to consistently tell when you ovulate (over a 6 month period), then the idea is you are ok with unprotected sex 2 days after ovulation, until your period. Be aware that if you have a short cycle, you can get pregnant at the end of your period.

If you are planning to use condoms though, I'd say just stick with those and experiment until you find ones that you like. Most failure with condoms is that people don't use them properly. And if it breaks, get the morning after pill immediately after. But knowing your cycles is still useful to avoid freakouts about mood swings, weight gain, etc.

I was joking a bit. What I mean to say is that we love each other, are married and could afford a child. This timing wouldn't be ideal but it wouldn't be a OMG NOO!! too. Ha ha.

Thanks for all the advice! I am going to talk to my doctor about it. I don't know why I didn't think of that. I talked to the doctor on campus in the health center but they encourage the pill like candy so they were useless. They just kept on telling me stats. Like "with this method there is a 10% chance.. so I really recommend the pill...."

If you don't want kids yet, use Nuva Ring or something. Natural family planning only works if you are ready to conceive. LOL.

Hormones don't work for some people. Even though the nuva ring is supposed to be localized, it can still cause depression and other side effects in some people.

I think if you can tolerate hormones, they are a good choice, but condoms and diaphragms are very effective if you use them correctly.

If you want good advice, talk to an ob/gyn outside of your campus health center. If you are willing to be diligent with condoms or a diaphragm, they should respect that choice and be willing to talk to you about it. Campus doctors assume that students are irresponsible and won't use condoms or diaphragms every time, and that's why they promote hormones so much.

After I became pregnant on the pill and then had an ectopic pregnancy (all while breastfeeding my then 18 month old) I decided to stop taking the pill and give up on hormonal bc.
For the next 5-6 years we used condoms sometimes but mostly just fertility awareness and withdrawal during my most fertile times. I had the occasional scare (every six months or so) and then when I decided to get pregnant we were successful immediately (well at my next ovulation time) so I'm quite sure that I'm quite fertile. My cycle is very regular and so this was a method that worked well for me. After this baby is born I will go back to using the natural methods (or occasionally condoms). Definitely talk to your doctor about it though. Good luck!

Thank you for your experience! I was looking for someone who "believed" in fertility awareness. If that makes any sense. Many people have an opinion of it and they have never tried it or known anyone that has tried it. I have been off the pill for 4 days now. I feel great. I have been charting the temperatures but I am on my period so no sex anyway.

^ I did try it, but I must not have been very good at it, LOL. I have a horrible time with hormones; migraines, mood swings, etc. I thought I could do it; I didn't mind if I got pregnant though, so it didn't really matter.

LOL. I wasn't refering to anyone in particular. I meant in general. People look at me like I am crazy when I mention in it. A lot of people just don't understand fertility or the idea that you can't get pregnant any day of the month. (Expect for the people who are ttc.)

Fertility awareness is only effective as BC if you have a regular cycle, are willing to monitor it + use a barrier while you are figuring out your ovulation/fertility window, and either use a condom or don't have intercourse during all of the days that you are fertile.

I have had my own experiences with it that I'd rather not share, but my best friend was using a half-assed version of fertility awareness + withdrawal and...she now has 2 kids.

It's only effective if you use it 100% of the time...that 1% can equal a baby if you're fertile!

I am now in the "use a barrier while you are figuring out your ovulation/fertility window" stage. Ha ha. I know a friend too who was half assed about it. She also has a child. Like any othe BC you need to be consistant.

I didn't. I'm glad someone knew I would be. We never actually used the natural method. I did temps but never relied on them.
