Kooba Fans?

I'm really wanting a Kooba bag, but not sure about authenticity. I don't know of any stores in my area that carry Kooba so, Is there anyone out there that could help me.

This one not so sure about?

These two bags I know are real...which do you like best?

I wish you had a better close up of the leather - the grain of it looks OK, but the leather does look a bit too shiny for a Sienna. It could be the flash from the camera though. I'm in NYC & I've seen some REALLY good Kooba fakes, but I've never seen a fake one w/the printed lining - they all have the "suede". Kooba stopped using the print in 2005 (maybe earlier) so this one is probably authentic. I'd need to see more pics of the leather & details to be %100 sure, so wait for some more opinions. I like the beige bag by the way, it's adorable

I love the Sienna. Total dream bag for me But, alas, I have no idea how to tell what's authentic or not.

I'd love the second one, totally my type, but I think the last one would be perfect for you. It would really fit you.

I bid on the last one, but it ended up going for $330...totally out of my price range. I really want #2, and have been thinking of asking the seller for a discount....is that rude? I've been watching it for awhile and it's been relisted.

I would do that! It's gorgeous, Char. I bet you'll love it.

I got a chance to look at the bag & it's authentic! My only cautionary advice would be to point out that the seller hasn't had any feedback since 2003 & now she has a bunch of stuff listed. All the listings look consistent, like the same person did them all & if she can afford to pay retail she probably doesn't do much eBaying. But I personally wouldn't bid much more than $200 - cause' that's all the coverage PayPal is offering. And I'd pay w/a credit card. Unfortunately, eBay accounts get hijacked all the time.
Since you're Kooba shopping I'll give you some advice on how to spot fakes! Good luck & I'm sorry that cute Elisha got away!

The leather on large Kooba bags always varies in texture/color/luster from section to section. What I mean by that is - the leather on the right strap might be more textured than the leather on the left strap, the leather on the inside by the top of the bag is a bit darker than the leather around the zipper, one of the decorative leather pieces isn't as shiny as the rest of the bag & so on. Sometimes the difference is subtle & sometimes it's very apparent, but it will usually be noticeable on at least one or two sections of the leather. Some Kooba styles are made from smooth leather & the differences tend to be very subtle, so you can't always see them in pics. Color & luster are easily distorted in non-professional pics (especially with black bags), but the texture is always easily seen in good pics. With patent leather the color & luster doesn't vary but the texture still does. Some Koobas have A LOT of color & texture variations & that's just part of the style, but there will still be more pronounced variations from section to section. Some Kooba leather doesn't vary in luster (this applies to suede as well), but there will still be differences in color or texture. With small Koobas it's harder to tell cause' sometimes there aren't many sections of leather to compare.

Also, Most Kooba bags (even the patent) are made from VERY soft leather. The bags collapse in on themselves when they aren't stuffed, even when you lay them on their side. Small bags & clutches tend to hold their shape better, but the leather is still soft. Fake bags tend to to be so stiff that you can usually tell how stiff they are from the pics.

Confused yet (LOL)! Go to Kooba & Revolve clothing online, they have great pics of Koobas from all angles & you can see what I'm talking about. Then goggle Kooba & find some websites that sell fakes (and there are many). Notice how uniform the color/texture & luster is on the fakes? There are a lot of obvious tells on some Kooba fakes (this eBay guide will give u more info: eBay Guides - BEWARE FAKE KOOBA HANDBAGS BEING SOLD AS AUTHENTIC ), but some of them have almost every detail right which makes it hard to tell. The one thing I've never seen done %100 right is the leather, even on the good fakes it's always wrong. The fake patent Koobas I've seen either look vinyl, or they have big ass stiff lookin' crinkles all over that look like they were done on purpose instead of being a natural characteristic of the leather. When it comes to fake pebble grain styles - they always make the entire bag pebbled & if you look at the close-up pics of your Sienna (which is pebbled), you'll see that some areas aren't pebbled at all & some are pebbled & crinkled. That, the Kooba print lining (Kooba wasn't being knocked off like crazy in the early years when they used that lining) & the quality of the work - tells me that the bag in those pics is authentic.

Still confused? The pics below should help. These first two are a Sienna from the Kooba website. Notice how soft the bag is? Even though it's stuffed, it's still can't "stand" up on it's own. Also, the straps that wrap around the bag are a wee bit lighter than the front of the bag (and, the left strap is lighter than the right strap). It's easier to see the color difference in the close-up pic & you can also see the subtle differences in texture.

This sienna in this pic is faker than Fake Frank Mcfakerton. See how stiff it is & how uniform the color is? I couldn't get a close-up of the texture, but if you spend some time looking at real Koobas you'll understand how ridiculously wrong the texture of this bag is.

Still with me? Below is a real Kooba Paige in java. You can see all the color variations even though this isn't a close-up.

Here we have a fake Paige in what's supposed to be java. See how off the texture is when compared to the real thing? The color is completely uniform & don't ya' luv da' crooked pocket!?

This knock-off Ada in sand is why it's REALLY important to know what the Kooba you're looking for REALLY looks like. This is a very good counterfeit, even going by my advice this looks kinda' real doesn't it?

Problem is this is what a real Kooba Ada in sand looks like:

Kooba used terraine textured lambskin for some Ada, Paige & Braedon bags & I think all Jillians. The same texture/color/luster rules apply to the terraine leather styles, but so far I've never seen a knock-off Kooba with terraine (or wanna' be terraine) leather.
All in all if you can, it's a good idea to try & find pics of the style of Kooba you're looking for (in the same color) on an authorized dealers website & on a counterfeit site. That way you can compare them & steer clear of the knock-offs on eBay. Also try blogs like The Bag Lady, Purse Blog & The Bag Snob. Blogs can be especially useful if you don't know the name of the style you want, you can just search for Kooba & see if anyone reviewed what your looking for & posted a pic.

**Note**The above advice doesn't apply to any of the python embossed or woven Koobas. The color/texture/luster on the leather portions of those bags tend to be pretty consistent overall, & the subtle differences don't photograph well. The leather on the fakes is a stiff cheaper leather than the real bags, but some of the fakes I've seen look so good that you probably couldn't tell from a pic.
