Lithotripsy anyone?

I have a damn 1 CENTIMETER kidney stone in my left kidney. It's not passing at the moment, just sitting there...

My urologist wants me to have lithotripsy to break it up and pass the damn thing. Anyone here have this procedure done? Tell me your experience, please. I know a bit about it, but I want to hear real-life stories.

^ yeah, i have one big one in the left kidney and 3-4 really small ones in the right. This sucks. None are passing right now, so I am in no pain, but the doctor is a bit worried about that big one.

Shi! That isn't a kidney stone!! Its a freaking GOLF BALL! My sister had it and passed everything pretty quickly. I would do it as I cannot imagine a 1 cm kidney stone coming out *ahem* down there.

It won't come out! I had a huge one that was stuck in my ureter and caused me to become ceptic and rushed to the ER. I had lithotripsy to smash it. It was relatively painless in comparison to surgery to cut it out. I was put under General anasthetic - and propped on my side and the "pulsing" began...about 45-1 hour later I woke up. I was damn sore for a day or two but nothing a little ibuprofen couldn't help (and they will give you Percoset and Vicodin to ease pain as well). 3 months later they found another (they didnt see the first one due to a gas bubble - I know TMI). It was significantly smaller, but still painful. They lithotripsied again - but this time since it was smaller and thus less smashing I was in less pain and was able to go to work 2 days later. Shi, I feel ya girl. You are going to be ok, don't worry!!

Awwww, Shireen! I know nothing about it, but I hope that once you get rid of this one, you get a break. You deserve it! No one should have to deal with this right after having a baby. Especially not after going through it so soon after childbirth, and now again!

Shi,
When I was 19 weeks pregnant with my daughter I developed (had actually been dealing with the pain a week already) a 1cm kidney stone. That was a loooooong pregnancy, multiple stent placements and then they induced me at 35 weeks because the stone had to go and lithotripsy will scramble a babies brains.
The lithotripsy was a no big deal procedure. In and out, they will place a stent in your ureter from your bladder to your kidney to help the remnants pass. You need to catch some of these remnants and find out why you are developing so many stones.
I gave up tea, that is a big cause. I was also told broccoli and caulifauer (which I will not give up), and black licorice. I've only had one sine then and it was only about 6mm, I passed it on my own at home.

I hope they are giving you some good drugs!

i have already passed two stones, so believe me, I'm sick of this shit. I just had surgery two weeks ago for a third.

My urologist doesn't think I'll need a stent this time; hopefully the damn thing will turn into sand. These things are ridiculous.

...I'm sorry you are going through this! I don't think you'll need a stent post-op...I didn't at least for both lithotripsy procedures. I just had one in before the procedure.

How's the little one!?

I know there is a medication to help prevent chronic recurrence of kidney stone's, I can't remember the name of it. Has there been any discussion of this with you?

I can't imagine having to worry about when the next stone will strike.

I was also encouraged to eat a diet high in acidic foods, like things high in Vit C and vinegar, etc...which also help to discourage that other fun itchy thing girls get.

I've heard of this medication, too. Urologist told me if I was consistently producing them this might be an option. I also heard that citrus (particularly lemons) with high acid can break down the calcium deposits. I stick to drinking nearly 80-100oz water/day (as best as I can) since my bad episodes in 2004 and that has helped tremendously.
