Irony...where I've been since baby...

Here's where I've been:

I had a rough couple of days; as I was leaving the hospital I started feeling intense pain in my left kidney and groin...familiar feeling of a kidney stone. They did an u/s and found it...i was sent home on vicodin to deal with the pain...the next day the pain was so bad I went back to the ER for more help. They did a CT scan and realized the stone was huge; 5mm by 9mm! It had passed through the ureter but was stuck at the junction into the bladder, causing an obstruction; my kidney was swelling...thankfully no infection though I needed bad.

I had surgery to remove the stone on Thursday evening...anesthesia and everything...it was a nightmare. I have a stent in my left ureter until Monday; that thing is uncomfortable, but better than the damn stone.

Meanwhile, I'm breastfeeding Emaan, she has jaundice...we get through that ok, but now I'm just...exhausted.

I didn't want you all to think I just disappeared.

Moral of the story: Shireen can deliver her own 7 lb., 11 oz. baby in the car, but needs surgery to deliver a 5mm by 9mm calcium oxalate kidney stone. Irony.

P.S. it seems there is a global announcement asking for help in the hospital when a delivery is happening in the parking lot. When I went back for the surgery, I was known...recognized...as the woman who delivered in the parking lot. Emaan was considered a little hero too. This is the silver lining to my nightmare.

Shireen I hope you are feeling better soon. Did they say anything about Emaan still having jaundice and how long it'll take to go away?

The jaundice is going away; it will take a week or so to be gone completely.

This is my third kidney stone; I was able to pass the first two on my own...i friggin' hate these things.

Wow, 3? That must be so painful. I'm glad the baby is getting better. So, i'm a bit confused, sorry. The stone is out, right? They have a tube in your ureter and they will remove that on Monday, right?

Yes, the stone is gone; the surgery was to remove it since it was so big. When the doctor went in to retrieve or break the stone, it broke on its own and was drained out. The stent is there to allow the ureter to heal after the stone and the surgery, to keep it from swelling. They will remove the stent on Monday.

This is the procedure, from a medical website:

Ureteroscopic Stone Removal

Ureteroscopic stone removal is achieved by passing a small fiberoptic instrument (a ureteroscope) through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. The surgeon then locates the stone and either removes it with a cage-like device or shatters it with a special instrument that produces a form of shockwave. A small tube (or stent) may be left in the ureter for several days after treatment to help the lining of the ureter to heal.

Glad you are better now That is an aweful lot to go through especially after just having a baby when you should be resting / relaxing and enjoying the little one (in addition to your other 5!).

OMG, no woman who has just given BIRTH deserves to have to deal with the pain of a kidney stone! A good friend of mine went through the painful ordeal of a kidney stone- she passed out from the pain- and I know that I hope to never have to experience that. Oh man. You're one strong woman!!!

OMG, Shi, that's a HUGE stone!! I'm so sorry you had to go through that right after having Emaan. Hopefully it's the last one for a while - I know how painful those are! I can't imagine having to deal with that and childbirth all in a couple of days! Glad to hear you're doing better!

Oh Shi, I am so sorry to hear of all your struggles since Emaan has been born. I wish you a speedy recovery from both your ordeals and I hope you feel better and get some rest. I'm glad you updated us as I was wondering how you were doing.

I was wondering where you went. Hope you're feeling better now
I had a huge calcium oxalate kidney stone 2 years ago. When it reached the size of my kidney, it began touching the walls and that was the worst pain I've ever experienced. I know exactly how you feel. I didn't even get any drugs for it and just suffered through the pain, b/c I didn't know it was a kidney stone. Then I went on a 3-month no-calcium diet and it made me feel much better (but fucked up my teeth). As a mom, you need calcium, so that diet would not work for you
