Removing gauze stuck to wound?

Is there any way to get this off short of ripping it? Like the dumbass I am, I skipped the last step from the deck of my parents' camper and scraped the hell out of my knee. Wasn't thinking, and didn't put any ointment on the gauze, which is now stuck. I cut most of it off, leaving one layer. Tried to soak in the pool y'day, slopped ointment right on top of the gauze, today I tried saline and peroxide...no luck. I REALLY don't want to just yank it off Ouch.

my advice would have been saline solution, but since you did that already

Do you think that soaking in epsom salts might help? I was just squirting saline on, since it's hard to soak unless I were to get in the tub, but I think we have some epsom salts. Make a giant saltwater bath?

I'd soak in the tub, then start picking at the edges after a good 1/2 hour of soaking, working your way into the middle. I'm kind of concerned that it didn't come off in the pool, though.

That seriously sounds so gross/painful. I hope you find a way to get it off!

You have already tried soaking in hydrogen peroxide?

If that's not removing it, you will have to let it come off on it's own, which it will.

It won't get infected or anything doing that? I don't mind leaving it on, I was just concerned that it would get nasty. I didn't *soak* it in peroxide really, I just soaked a cotton ball and squeezed it out over the gauze.

Geebs, it's been on since Saturday night. Sunday morning, I took all but the stuck layer off, and when we got home I started trying to soak it with wet paper towels. Sunday night the pool, and the rest yesterday.

if it gets infected, that won't be the reason.

surround it in gauze or cotton soaked in hydrogen peroxide for several hours. make sure the cotton is always damp with hydrogen peroxide. if it starts to dry, replace the cotton and resoak it. soaking it in water will not accomplish much.

I used to get deep scrapes on my legs from softball all the time. i used vaseline to keep it wet so the scap wouldn't rip. I've heard that peroxcide is too harsh to put on cuts (it probably makes a difference if it's scabbed over). Your skin will push out anything that doesn't belong there, so it'll be fine

I got it off today, looks fine underneath, just the normal pink scar tissue. I just kept trimming it back as the edges would work loose, and kept it clean. But lesson learned, I'll definitely be sure to put antibiotic ointment on in the future!

well i had the same problem but ive tried taking mine off for i think 3 days now. i was going down a hill and would'nt ya know it, i got a death wobble, fell off scraped the crap out of my shoulder, knee and arm. i tried this Band-Aid antisceptic stuff, and i mean it helped a little bit but theres skin attached to the top of it and it wont come off without ripping it off. i think later im going to soak in a tub or something and try to get it off. also theres yellow stuff on the gauze but idk if its pus or the disinfectant stuff i put on it when ever i put the thing on. and yes i put ointment stuff on it and it still stuck.

When I saw this thread (before I actually came into the section), I didn't even realize that I was the OP!

olive oil!

we just had the gauze stuck to wound problem with our 7 year old son. after several failed attempts...(soaking in water, vaseline, perozide...) we tried olive oil. soaked the guaze through and slowly peeled and reapplied until...viola! and not another tear was shed.
