Pain in my hand

It isn't carpal tunnel, as I assume carpal tunnel is in the wrist, and this pain is on the top of my left hand (I am left handed).
I used to get it the morning after a long night of beer pong, but I haven't played that game in over a year. The last time I had this pain was spring break after I played ping pong. Now I just got it again this morning but I don't know why. I haven't done anything to overwork my hand, like writing or typing on the computer more than normal.
It is more of an ache than a pain and icing it doesn't help. Most of the other times I've gotten it, there have been reasons for it (grasping and throwing ping pong ball a lot, grasping ping pong racket, etc) but I wonder if something else can cause it.
Any answers? Thanks!

I don't know but man am I right there with you. I have intense pain as of late in my pointer finger and I think it is due to strain from typing and stuff. If you say you got the pain once before from a certain activit/movement, you probably got it again from a similar activity/movement. Really think about what you do with your hands and you might come up with something. I had to change things like what hand I hold the tv clicker with because I never realized it was irritating my fingers.

Icing doesn't help me a lot either. A strict Ibuprofen regime does after a while. Once it goes away then I focus on not doing the movements that might've caused a flare up in the first place.

sophia - yours might be from a cyst on the top of your wrist. when you bend your wrist down, does a lump protrude from the top of it?

erin - yours sounds like when i had tendonitis.

have either of you had your hand/wrist/fingers problems looked at by a doctor? they can do strengthening/physical therapy with you if it is diagnosed.

I agree with Zokie. Or it can be a type of arthritis. Young people get it too.

top of your hand like, the knuckle area...or top, like right on the back of your hand?

I've been lucky not to get major strain injuries (I'm not one of those practice-8-hrs-a-day pianists, but they can happen to any of us) but hearing about anyone's hand injury makes me die a little bit inside! You might want to see a doctor, especially if you can find someone who specializes in musician-related injuries and would know a lot about the hand.

Pianochica - I used to get a similar strain after praticing flute for 4 hours a day while competing (we're going back 12 years, now though). I would def. see a PT on this one, I have to say my favorite part of this post was:

There is no bump on my wrist when I bend it down, and the pain is on the back of my hand, not near my knuckles.
I realized its probably from driving, since I just got back from vacation and so I didn't drive for two weeks, and I use mostly my left hand on the steering wheel, so today I tried to only use my right hand.

^^yup, you've got some tension issues then...maybe you were flexing your wrist too much (like bending your hand back too much)...if we were talking about playing piano, I might be able to help you a bit, but with driving idk maybe push the seat back a bit so your arms won't be so scrunched in?
