spider veins rant!!!! :( ETA: pics

Ugh, I hate spider veins!!!

I started noticing I had them on my legs when I was probably...14? I have a pretty good-size cluster of them on the outside of my right knee that dates to at least back then. More and more have been popping up on my thighs since then, even during weight loss (I thought weight loss would make them go away?!)...I swear, soon enough my thighs are going to look like a friggin' atlas! Please tell me there are other 22 year olds out there who have old lady spidey legs? My mom even said she would talk to her plastic surgeon about getting me those shots that wither away spider veins before I run off to grad school...they're that bad but I fear that even after zapping the ones I have, more will just pop up! ugh! Am I just genetically screwed or is there something I can do that will keep them from popping up all over the place? I've already tried Vitamin E and that hasn't seemed to help.

and a pic...not for the faint of heart! (this is the outside of my right thigh/knee)

I started getting them at a young age too. I hear you get them from standing alot, wearing alot of high heels and lack of circulation. Lots of water might help you from getting more. I also heard those shots can make you get more later.

weird I almost never wear high heels (with my chunky legs it's harder to balance on them, plus I have wide feet that don't fit well into heels)...I hope those shots wouldn't make me get more

I'm 35 and my legs do look like an atlas.

However, I am not overly concerned with my legs, as they are rarely seen by anyone other than myself and my husband.

I do think genetics may have something to do with it, but on a brighter side I've noted that most of my friends are starting to get them too

I guess I can count myself extremely lucky. 6 pregnancies and a grandmother who had to wear those special pantyhose for spider/varicose veins, and I have not one. Thank goodness!

I do think there is a very strong hereditary link to these though.

Talk to FriskyL. She says there is a laser that zaps them away now!

PC dont get the shots. I have heard that the shots can later lead to getting the big ones (varicose). Check into lasering. There are lasers now that can zap them in one session. Check into a gentleyag or a vbeam. Those are the best out there for veins.

Heather what price did they quote you for the facial veins? Just curious.

Here's a bit of info for you PC

Pulsed Dye Lasers have a well-documented history of safely and effectively treating vascular lesions for over 15 years. They are designed to deliver an intense but gentle burst of laser light to the skin. This laser light is specifically absorbed by the blood vessels of the vascular lesion
(a broken vessel or capillary).

These vessels are gently heated and coagulated. The body absorbs the treated blood vessels during the natural healing process. The laser has a unique ability to selectively target the blood vessels of a vascular lesion without adversely affecting the surrounding tissue. It is so safe and effective that it has been used successfully for the treatment of infants as young as a few weeks old. Vbeam protects the skin is during laser treatment by a dynamic cooling device which sprays a cool liquid onto the skin before each laser pulse, cooling the upper layers of the skin and providing patients with an increased comfort.

Leg Spider Veins

Age, pregnancy, and heredity play a large part in the development of varicose and spider veins. Varicose veins are better treated by sclerotherapy while small red and purple spider veins are easily and comfortably treated by vascular lasers like Vbeam.

The American Academy of Dermatology believes that the new laser technology for treating spider veins is more effective with fewer side effects than sclerotherapy or electrodessication for the same size vessels . Laser surgery is more comfortable for patients because there are no needles or incisions. When the laser hits the skin, the patient only feels a small pinch, and the skin is soothed by cooling both before and after the laser is applied

my leg isn't quite as bad as that before picture...though if they continue to grow like they have been my leg might look like that when I hit 40

I'll definitely ask my mom about getting lasered. ugh, I definitely think it is genetic. My dad had to have a ginormous varicose vein (really it was a big swelling) lasered off the front of his leg. of course I have his tree trunk legs/feet

Yeah if your parents have them you most likely will get them. You should be wearing support hose if you are going to wear heels PC.

I rarely wear heels (90% of the time i'm in tennis shoes, flipflops or uggs) but when I do they're usually open toed...my skin is also really sensitive on my legs so pantyhose bother me like none other and I almost always go bare legged with dresses/skirts. They don't happen to make cotton support hose?

I would get laser too. Just be aware that they will pop up where you haven't been lasered. But you can have those lasered again too.
Things to avoid when you tend to get spider veins: harsh temperatures, scrubs, massages, anything that makes blood circulate even more.
I inherited mine from my dad. So I got spider veins from my dad, and sporty thighs from my mom.

Sitting and standing for long periods of time is one of the causes of spider/varicose veins, as well as genetics. My mom had an occupation that had her stand on concrete all day long. She has tons of varicose veins (the fat bulgy veins). I remember her having them when I was a child, so she must have been fairly young when she first got them. Luckily, I do not have any at all...yet

Exercise is a good way to prevent further veins. I read on the internet the force of your contracting muscles keep blood from pooling, so you don't need support hose. Maybe that is why I do not have any yet. I try to workout as much as possible.

Here is the article about veins and exercise. I am sure it applies to the smaller spider veins as well.

hmmm...that definitely makes sense for varicose veins (my dad doesn't exercise nearly enough which is why I think his got worse) but I think since I started exercising hardcore to lose weight, I've actually grown more spider veins!

I think I have spider veins on my lower calf as well, but they're not that noticeable yet...
I think I have very weak capillary and blood vessel walls because I bruise VERY easily. Would that have anything to do with it?

I have spider veins on my thighs. I've been told it's because I don't sit properly. I have a tendency to cross my legs or curl up in a chair for long periods of time which allows blood to pool, hence spider/varicose veins.

FriskyL: Do you know if the pain from the laser is similar to that of the one used for hair removal?

Its a little bit less pain IMO. The veins you feel more heat than you do with laser hair removal but the power is not as high.
